Susan Bennett is known for her radio and television voiceover work. She has narrated a host of audiobooks, including those from bestselling authors Peggy Post, Linda Francis Lee, Dorothea Benton Frank, Emma McLaughlin, and Nicola Kraus. Her reading of "Tiger, Tiger "by Margaux Fragoso won an "AudioFile "Earphones Award. In describing Susan s reading style, "Publishers Weekly" has said, Bennett's narration is excellent: she draws the listener into the story... keeping the pacing brisk and entertaining. Susan also dabbles in the music industry as the singer and keyboardist for The Interactive! Band. Not for the faint of heart--dark juicies

After reading these singularly unpleasant but delicious descents into madness (particularly the title tale, "The Thief", which chronicles in a surreal manner a vicious madman's obsession with the Mona Lisa as the personification of Satan), I realized that Heym's work would be neither easy to find nor readily available at mainstream bookstores. In the tradition of Maupassant, Schopenhauer and Trakl, Heym employs dark poetic atmosphere to reveal the futility of human effort and obsesses over life's horrors (in an entertaining, exhilarating way.) Hallucinatory imagery abounds as Heym's wretched, often deranged narrators commit atrocities, believing themselves to be in another state of being then they actually are (case in point: "The Madman"). I'm thinking that Heym's poetry must be in the vein of Brennan, Leopardi, and the more bleak parts of Dante. These tales, however, are not to be taken in large doses for most. Definitely recommended if you're looking for something discouraging, odd and exciting all at once.

Decadence and Expressionism Intermingled

Georg Heym (1887-1912), better known for his poetry, takes expressionism to the extreme in these short stories. Heym's morbid tales glorify madness, sickness, death, and grief, which puts him in league with the decadents. Critics were right to compare his style to Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Poe. What you find in these stories are very macabre and pessimistic visions with stunning poetic imagery and metaphors. On top of that, Heym has a gift for the short story form. Even when his premise is simple, Heym's poetic language and exploration of his characters' psyche are compelling. Susan Bennett's translations deserve credit because nothing seems lost in them.
I can't imagine how the reading public in 1913 could handle "The Madman", which had to have been the most disturbing story of a psychopath yet written. The story is a catalogue of criminal acts committed by an insane asylum escapee. Two children are brutally murdered in graphic detail and the psychopath crushes their skulls while singing a hymn: "he accented each beat loudly, and every time he banged the two little heads together, like a musician crashing his cymbals." Moments later he is disoriented and grieves over the dead children. What's disturbing beyond the violence itself is how Heym takes you inside the mind of this madman. Heym conveys the hallucinations and the reality of what's really happening so that you pity him. On the other hand, his insanity is frightening: he pretends to be a hyena attacking a peasant woman, he chases a rat mistaking it for his wife, and he imagines he's riding a big fish in an ocean, although in reality he is crushing a woman to death in a church. Even for today's desensitized audiences, this story is quite shocking.
"The Thief" is another powerful story of madness: a man steals and vandalizes the Mona Lisa, which he imagines hides a demonic succubus. The thief believes himself to be a servant of God and demands the woman in the portrait repent for her supposed sins. Frustrated by her smile and aural hallucinations of her laughing at him, he decides that "only death would wipe that look from her mouth." Once again, Heym knows how to write about insanity and describe obsessions and delusions so convincingly. "The Autopsy" is a tour-de-force comparable to Baudelaire's "A Carcass". Here Heym describes in grisly detail what happens to a corpse in an autopsy. Heym's prose is beautiful, even though the subject is grotesque: "The intestines wound around their arms, greenish yellow snakes, and the excrement dripped onto their coats, a warm, foul fluid. They punctured the bladder; the cold urine shimmered inside like yellow wine." As this autopsy is occurring, the dead man has a spark of life left and dreams of a lover in a meadow. Fans of Baudelaire won't be disappointed with this 3-page prose poem.
Heym explores the grief of unfulfilled love in "Jonathan" and "An Afternoon". "Jonathan" depicts a young man bedridden in a hospital after losing his legs. Finding no compassion from the hospital staff and experiencing constant pain, he dwells on despair until he sees a young woman in another room across from his. They talk occasionally and the young man falls in love with her, but things end badly in a haze of fantastic hallucinations. "An Afternoon" also creates an atmosphere of crushed love. This time a young boy waits in anticipation to meet his first girlfriend, only to find her with another boy.
The two oddball stories in this collection are "The Fifth of October" and "The Ship". "The Fifth of October" centers on a revolutionary mob and is rather mundane. "The Ship", on the other hand, is Heym's successful stab at gothic horror. A small boat crew arrive on a deserted island and find its inhabitants dead from the plague, but the source of the plague turns out to be a menacing supernatural presence. I found this little story as chilling and suspenseful as anything by M.R. James.
Bottom line: These grim stories will appeal to those who like hyper-expressionism and the decadents' morbid obsession with sickness and death. Although Heym has a voice all his own, he would be in good company with Poe, Maupassant, and Baudelaire.
