About the Author
Jim Corbett was a renowned hunter.


Martin Booth (1944-2004) was the bestselling author of novels including "Hiroshima Joe, Islands of Silence", and "The Industry of Souls", which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Another novel, A" Very Private Gentlemen", was adapted into the 2010 movie, The American, starring George Clooney. He also wrote several nonfiction books, including "Cannabis: A History, Opium: A History", and the memoir "Golden Boy: Memories of a Hong Kong Childhood". Booth was born in England, but spent much of his childhood in Hong Kong, a location that would deeply inspire his writing. He moved back to England at the age of 20, and started his literary career as a poet. He worked as a schoolmaster, a job he held until 1985, when the success of Hiroshima Joe allowed him to devote himself full-time to his writing. At the time of his death in 2004, he was living in Devon, England.

Jim Corbett will accompany you into the past with you and lead you into the future, this is a book that reiterates, that nature has no beginning as it has no end..., a revealing insight into one remarkable man, a britisher who was in India to live with its wonderful people and animals and who richly deserves the honour of being remembered even today, in the land he loved, and the place he tread, bears the call, CORBETT NATIONAL PARK.

Entertaining narrative with genuine depth

James E. Corbett grew up in an India that was still a colony of Great Britain. This is an autobiographical account of episodes in his life -- by no means complete, but a taste of what it was like to grow up, not in the culture of British India, but in the jungles that surrounded it. He was a self-taught naturalist and tracker, learning to hunt, track, find direction, and survive in the jungles. The stories are mostly entertaining -- except toward the end, where I found myself flipping forward in some distaste because of his description of hunting tigers for sport. But Corbett himself demonstrates a healthy reverence for life, and moreover, a strong appetite for learning about the natural world, and for developing his sensitivity to it.
The book is largely narrative, but mixed in with it is a little bit of his philosophy of jungle law, and some material about what he has learned through his experiences, supplemented, of course, with more stories. This, like other anecdotal evidence, should be taken with a grain of salt and tested against one's own experience. For instance, he writes that venomous snakes, with one exception, are slower and so have to wriggle more in order to move around, and so their tracks will reflect this, while non-venomous snakes are speedy and agile and will have straight rather than wave-form tracks. A friend of mine who's very familiar with snakes disputes this.
But, as Corbett himself says, "Having stated that the book of Nature has no beginning, and no end, I would be the last to claim that I have learned all that is to be learned of any of the subjects dealt with here, or that this book contains any expert knowledge." Undoubtedly, though, through his extensive experience alone, he has learned enough to be a master, in harmony with his jungle.

My all-time favorite author

Jim Corbett is one of my all-time-favorite authors. I have read all his books, but the one I love the most is `Jungle Lore'. I have the first Indian edition of the book. It belonged to my dad who bought it in 1971 for 2.50 Rupees (which is roughly 5 cents)!

Corbett loved the jungle. He is considered the greatest tiger hunter India ever knew, and the reason he was so successful was not only because he knew the Kumaon jungle like the back of his hand, but also because he understood the jungle. He could understand the sounds of animals and birds. He could even make those sounds with great accuracy. He could look at the pug marks of animals on a mud path and tell a whole story of what happened there that morning. He had a sixth sense of jungle which he called his "jungle sensitiveness".

This book is not about hunting. This is a book about nature. Corbett writes with lot of humbleness and humor. One cannot stop admiring his courage and his vast knowledge of the jungle after reading this book.

In a work that is slight in both size and content, consultant Gerber (The E-Myth; The E-Myth Revisited) makes one compelling point: entrepreneurs (the "E" in his title) need to draw a clear distinction between the work they do and the business they have created and are in charge of. If they don't, all they will have is a job and not a company. As Gerber correctly puts it, "The value of your equity is directly proportional to how well your business works. And how well your business works is directly proportional to the effectiveness of the systems you have put into place." Had he then talked specifically about how readers can create and implement those systems how to hire, price, subcontract and the like his book could have been an extremely valuable tool. Instead, he gives contractors of all sizes general advice concerning the need to create turnkey systems and manage their time with few real suggestions about how to do it. The overall tone is supportive of entrepreneur contractors, and the book may be of some help to contractors just starting out.

Gerber, who developed the E-myth principles for small businesses, now applies them to contractors. Using what he calls Strategic Thinking (or Systems Thinking), he counsels contractors to consider the broad scope of business and focus on strategic rather than tactical efforts, emphasizing the importance of thinking properly. Readers are advised to take action by creating an idealized version of the business and what it takes to become a preeminent contractor and then organize the business to bring that vision into reality. Steps for doing this include identifying the key functions of the business, the essential processes that link those functions, and the results projected for the business, and then clearly stating in writing how each phase will work. This small book contains a wealth of good ideas and information, and although it is clearly an infomercial for Gerber's consulting activities, it is also an excellent road map for entrepreneurial contractors. Incredibly basic...if you don't know this stuff you really shouldn't own a business

Read the following statement, feel enlightened, and DON'T buy this book. "To be a successful contractor you must find reliable employees to do "your" work, and provide them fail-safe systems to carry out procedures that create equity for your business."
Now please give me $16.
...or waste your money on this book.

The author prefaces the idea that as a contractor you probably don't know how to run a business.

This book is really directed at those who have no business "common sense". In which case, a "little book" like this probably won't do you much good. If you don't know what "equity" is, you probably shouldn't own a business. If you don't understand that in order to run a successful business you need to find employees who will do the work for you, you probably shouldn't own a business. If you don't understand that you need to establish systems in your business that everyone can follow so things run smoothly, you shouldn't own a business.

The author of this book has no experience in contracting, and actually tries to compare what you do to business's like McDonald's and Frank Sinatra.
Don't assume this book will provide any insight into how to install any of the aforementioned factors for a successful business. It merely states that they exist, and you need to figure them out...Good Luck! LOL

Great book just needs a bit of up-dating

Like many of the E-myth series the basic premise is that business owners don't really understand all the intricacies of running a small business. Most people are responding to technical skills coupled with an entrepreneurial spasm and launch themselves into their new endeavour and then wonder why they struggle. The E-myth for contractors delves into reasons that many contractors get caught in the 'working harder and enjoying their business less' syndrome. The book is concise and well written and defines the issues well, but it doesn't put as much effort into the solution as it does the problem. Perhaps the better book for presenting a solution is E-Myth Mastery, which is comprehensive and built in a step by step fashion. So give this book a quick read and get inspired and then give mastery a try to build a stronger business.

I liked the fact the Michael used concrete examples of what he wrote about. He clearly demonstrated that he understands the problems contractors face and create for themselves.

There wasn't much I didn't like.

I would recommend this book to any contractors, just starting out or struggling for years.

I choose the rating of five Stars because there wasn't a six star rating available.

FLIGHT 714 COMING IN TOO LOW ON RUNWAY ZERO-EIGHT

I have been a fan of Arthur Hailey since reading HOTEL back in the 1960s, now having almost all his work in hardcover editions. While at Goodwill, my favorite low price bookstore, I came upon a hardcover copy of RUNWAY ZERO-EIGHT for only a minor amount of money, how could I lose.

Turns out this is one of the better books I've had the pleasure to read in quite awhile. It is a story of suspense it is true, but it is more so a story of people and their ability to work together during a crisis of massive proportion. Even after 50 years this book is one that not only offers truisms but also offers great reading enjoyment.

Reading this book, which can be done in a few hours time, will prompt me to now turn to AIRPORT for another reading. Though Mr. Hailey is gone from us he has left us many enjoyable books to re-read and enjoy.

One caution: I would not start reading this book unless I had the time to read it in one sitting, it is that type of book that one will not want to put down. As stated, an average reader can read through this one in only a few hour's time. But the enjoyment will last much longer.

A good read

The headline says it all. I don't have to repeat myself. The book's about food poisoning on a cross-country flight. The
pilot and copilot, and most of the passengers, are affected
by food poisoning. The flight crew and the passengers affected by it had ordered the beef. The rest ordered chicken. One of the passengers was a pilot in the war. He
has to take over when the pilot becomes incapacitated. When the copilot becomes ill, the head stewardess, yes, that's what they were called in the days before political correctness, has to take over for him. However, the passenger who takes over for the pilot, hasn't flown in years and has to be talked through it by another pilot on the ground. Another review compared it to Airplane! Airplane! was a spoof of those '70s disaster movies. It wasn't based on this book.

The book is in excellent condition and I read it out loud to my mother who is on Hospice. We both learned a lot. Broadens my thinking and opens me up more to spiritual issues. I would recommend any book by Doreen Virtue PhD.

"I Can Make You Thin" - Review

For almost 3 years now I have been handing this book and 'mind-reprogramming' CD to every patient who comes to me to lose weight, or who is caught up in the mentality of diets, scales, cravings, or overeating.

I am *delighted* that this version of "I Can Make You Thin" is finally available on Amazon.com rather than having to hunt it from the UK site. The long wait is over!

At the risk of making this book seem too simple, here are Paul McKenna's 4 golden rules...
1. When you are hungry, eat.
2. Eat what you want (not what you think you "should".)
3. Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful.
4. When you are full stop.

I've seen other "I Can Make You Thin" reviews that dismiss the 4 rules as just obvious common sense. I'm not sure what common sense they can really mean since the rules make a mockery of the majority of get thin / lose weight approaches around. Rule 2 in particular certainly disagrees with the 'common sense' that I was taught as a medical doctor.

Even if the rules are common sense, McKenna needs to be given great credit for showing people HOW to live these habits. Hopefully you are buying this for the results, not just to have a fun read and a relaxing, new-wavy listen.

Yes, the coverpages are a bit hypey, but the inside is less so. The book is refreshingly thin :), jargon-free, and entertaining.

McKenna's style also involves techniques such as tapping (TFT/EFT), hypnosis and NLP . Hypnosis is what first made Paul famous, and I've seen NLP Practitioners review this and say they knew all of these tricks before. In NLP terms Paul is saying that the Golden Rules are the "model" for being "naturally thin". Just knowing all the geewiz psych techniques won't help if you have the wrong model as I suspect most NLPers do.

More importantly, you don't need any of these techniques to apply the 4 golden rules and lose weight.

Most people can go the book & CD, discover the Aha moments, and get started on transforming their relationship with food and their weight straight away.

There might be a group of people that could eat according to the 4 rules and not be thin, but I agree with what Paul says. For myself, I'm yet to meet such a person.

I have counseled people who thought it didn't work for them, but it turned out they hadn't gotten the rules into their behavior, so here are some extra pointers...

- Just listening to the CD over and over doesn't seem to be enough. The book plays a big part too. Expect to re-read the book at least once. You can succeed without the CD, so if it doesn't suit you, no sweat.

- Don't add more rules. Extra rules almost always conflict with the four golden rules. Must eat breakfast? No. Just eat when you are hungry. Have to eat only fresh food? Check you really want to eat it, and whether you might want to eat anything else a bit more. Etc, etc.

- Having trouble visualizing? Just act 'as if' you are visualizing, or on the CD just leave it to Paul.

- Don't make exercise the focus. Improved fitness will improve your chances of living longer, but unfortunately the best research evidence is that exercise doesn't help much in losing weight. Keep to the four rules, which are all about food and getting back in control.

- If you have a question or a difficulty, the answer is somewhere in the book. The book alone truly is comprehensive (unlike watching YouTube videos or reading this review.) Indeed the updates have covered the two or three remaining gaps I had found before, including the extra information for self-sabotage issues.

In summary, McKenna is not the only person to propose this way of eating, but his is the most accessible version I know about. His is also the most likely to reach out from the page and permanently change your thinking and your behavior, and thereby your weight.

You can buy his measly book just to prove Paul wrong :)

Life changer

Each person is unique, and everyone will respond to this system differently. This is how it is working for me.
I have been using this system for a little over a week now, and my pants are beginning to fit again. I have not even finished reading the book! The CD for me has worked wonders in changing my relationship with food. I have fallen asleep listening to the CD about 75% of the time, and find myself waking up when he is counting down. His voice, overdubs and music seem to do the trick. Following the four principles and coming up with a scale for hunger was very helpful for me as well. I was at a recent birthday party, and I easily passed on all the wonderful junk food that was readily available. My friends see how I am eating now, and are wondering if I am not eating because I am stressed out. :) I just smile and tell them I am not hungry.

Try this method, read the book,listen to the CD, be patient, stick with it and it will work.

Lost 45 pounds in11 months, and still losing...

I initially lost 38 pounds in 7 months. As I've mentioned in other reviews, I am wheelchair dependent. I had tried many weight loss methods with typical results: lose a lot for 6 weeks, plateau, gain weight back. I needed a system that didn't require extra exercise or journaling. I read the book and now I listen to the CD every night. From the beginning weight loss was slow but steady, about a pound a week for 8 months, some weeks a little less. I do feel mildly hungry quite often, but anytime I really get hungry I just eat.

I can't explain why this is working so well, but it's very easy and I'm very happy with the results. I do notice a difference on days when I didn't listen to the CD the night before. The biggest change is, without any hard and fast rules, I stop eating before I'm full. Last week I was in a candy store buying a birthday present. Got the free sample, took a bite, thought it was delicious, wrapped it up and put it in my purse for later. I've never done that before, ever.

I don't know if McKenna's method will work for others, but it's definitely working for me.

p.s. the CD has two parts. The first is a regular self help lecture. The second is the "trance" track. He uses a lot of special audio effects, including overlapping voices, voice fading away in one speaker and getting louder in the other, etc. I don't try to follow it consciously, just relax and let it play.

Updated January 3, 2013: I've now lost 45 pounds in 11 months and still losing. So slow, but it's working. I had no difficulty during the holidays, including large family parties at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, and enjoyed it--I just didn't want as much. I hesitated slightly before putting chocolate on my "wish list" as usual, but then went ahead. (I love chocolate.) I got several nice gift boxes, as usual. And then, not at all as usual--I have only opened one so far, and there are only 6 pieces gone in two weeks. I am very much looking forward to the other gifts, but I also know I'll get to them in time, no rush. I used to eat 3 candy bars a day; now it takes 3 or 4 days to finish one. It's not any kind of planned portion control. I just only eat what I'm truly hungry for.

Since this is the time of year when one tends to be bombarded with ads for weight loss systems, I did want to mention one big difference between this book and most of the other plans. McKenna never promises "you won't be hungry." I do get hungry, several times a day, and that's a good thing. It means I'm not overeating. Now when I get hungry, it doesn't worry me. I just think carefully about just what I'm hungry for before selecting the food. I think that alone has made a big difference for me.

I do have to say that I still find listening to the CD daily essential. So I don't know if the method would work without that. I don't think it would for me. So even if the advice is very similar to that of other books, for me it is the trance aspect that sets this one apart. I will update again in a few months.

I have been reading about strategies and control systems under different texts. The volume is great and topics covered wide-ranging. I look for an integration of the knowledge these texts contained. "Business Planning and Control" is a text that fits the slot. It provides a breadth that cannot be obtained without voluminous research. It also enables a depth that can be followed by reading the books listed in the "Further Reading" section. It provides an overview for students to get a grasp of the different facets in formulating strategies and executing controls. The book serves as a guide to the complex and unnerving issues of integrating theories and performance.

A college book written by a high school student (a marginal one at that)

I have never had a book so riddled with spelling and grammar errors, and when you consider this is a book used by colleges, it becomes an even bigger issue. The format changes from page to page and chapter to chapter. The end of chapter problems are categorized differently in different sections of THE SAME PROBLEM. I.E. - You'll see two products listed as product M and N in the heading, and then in the sections it will ask you for details about product A and B, and then back to M and N. Terrible... Terrible.

Chapter 7 uses some information in the back of the book. All it tells you to do is look in the back of the book for the information. Hey, how about giving a page number? As they say in Spain... "RIDICULOSO!"

College professors, please find a better book for your students to use. This one will not only frustrate your students, it will reduce your credibility as a professor.
