Exccelent written book by Ralph McGehee about CIA never been a central intelligence agency but cover acction arm of the president's foreign policy advisers which have capacity to overthrows or supports foreign goverments while reporting "intelligence' justifying those activities. This book is one of the outstanding books written by former CIA agents. Everyone should read it to find the truth!!!

Well Researched, Very Informative, and Much Needed

Freedman covers feminists' and civil rights activists' attempts to broaden the definition of rape from the colonial era to the present day. As the author argues, who is protected by rape is largely linked to who is entitled to full citizenship. Women actively sought ways to have more control over their bodies, by advocating for women jurors, women police officers, as well as participated in grassroots activism to expand the definition of rape to include the act of seduction, the protection of young girls, and street harassment (called mashing at the time). She also has a chapter of the sexual vulnerability of boys, which emerged as our modern ideas of sexuality formed at the turn of the century, and with the arrival of new immigrants who were associated with sodomy. The bulk of the book covers the 1870s to the 1930s. She does, however, start in the colonial era and goes to the present day by demonstrating that our current debates over the meaning of rape is largely reflective of prior arguments.

Those interested in women's history and African American history will find this book as a great contribution to the politics of women's bodies. Social class and race were critical aspects in determining whether a woman's account of rape was believable, and often middle- and upper-middle class white men got off the hook by pointing out their accusers' prior sexual history (an issues that has not gone away). Those interested in women's history will also be interested in the chapter titled "Smashing the Masher," where she documents white and black women efforts to take on men who harassed them in the street. Reflective of modern-day defense class, some women advocated for women police officers, and some women took boxing lessons to defend themselves. This demonstrated women's rejection of male protection and embracement of self-reliance.

Regarding topics that I wished the author would had discussed: sexual violence beyond the black-white binary. She does not mention in detail about the struggle and advocacy of Latino and Asian women. Mexican women are mentioned, but not as a political force. The Mexican-American civil rights movement has its origins in the 1920s, and it makes the reader wonder if Mexican women were viewed as sexually available, and if so, did they resist. As for Asian women, since one-third of Chinese women immigrants were prostitutes, it does beg the question of what type of organizing, if any existed, emerged to challenge the position of Chinese women. This might, however, require examining sources written in Spanish and in various Asian languages. Although rape is a broad topic, and I did not expect the author to cover every form of rape, I did wonder what type of activism or concerns did people have regarding the emergence of women colleges. They appeared in the late 1800s, and girls on their own and away from their parents' supervision probably caused some social anxieties. Other than those two issues, the author accomplishes her goal by showing that the current culture war over the meaning of rape is a reoccurring theme in society. And as she states in the end, our struggle to define rape will continue so long as inequalities in race and gender continue to characterize American society. In our current times, this book is well needed.

The Old Farmer's Almanac - still going strong after 225 years!

Every fall, I purchase the Old Farmer's Almanac for the following year. I used to be able to find in in the grocery store, but that is no longer the case. Thank goodness Amazon is able to carry a wide range of products. For me, it is nice to see the familiar cover year after year and a format that includes the things I want to see and refer to. I didn't even realize this was the 225th anniversary until I looked to purchase the 2017 edition.

P.S. Someone complained about the ads, but, to me, the ads are what help keep the cost reasonable. Ad-free magazines are relatively cost prohibitive these days.

A solid study of an important health care system.

Affordable Excellence (2013) by William Haseltine looks at a truly remarkable story in healthcare, namely that of the Singaporean Health Care System. Singapore has the equal fourth longest life expectancy in the world and yet spends only 4% of GDP on health care, making it only the 32nd highest spender on health care. Singapore's healthcare system is not experiencing rapidly rising costs that threaten the financial viability of the state as are most developed countries. How this is being done should be of critical importance to anyone interested in world affairs. This book covers the whole medical system in detail. It's not a light read but is fairly short.
Singaporeans have a system called Medisave where 6.5-9% of their income is put aside into a medical savings account. This can be used for their own health care or that of their immediate family. In addition the government provides catastrophic cover.
The government and private industry then provide health services and people are able to choose what sort of service they want but much of the money comes from their own Medisave account so people care about the cost of the service they are receiving. People also have means testing for the subsidy they get for care.
The end result of all this has been a medical system that is, in many ways, world leading. It's remarkable that no one has emulated this system unlike Singapore's compulsory savings system that has been copied by Australia.
The book looks at the end products of the system, how the payment system works, how costs are controlled, how it's financed, the history of the system, research done in Singapore and has a Q & A session with Singapore's Ministry of Health.
One thing worth noting is that the quality of the graphics in the Kindle version is seriously substandard and they are very difficult to read.
The book is a dry, technical, somewhat difficult read but it does cover a really important health system. Singapore shows that high quality health care can be provided at low cost. It's really worth reading for anyone interested in health policy.

America's Leaders Really Need to Read and Take This Seriously

The U.S. spends more on healthcare than every other nation - now about 18% of GDP on healthcare, projected to hit 20% by 2020. Singapore, on the other hand, spends less than one-fourth (< 4% GDP) that of the U.S., and about half that of Western European nations. As for outcomes, Singapore ranks 6th in the world, well ahead of many developed nations, including the U.S. Singapore has one of the lowest under-five mortality rates in the world, cancer survival rates are similar to Europe's, and its cardiovascular disease death rate is half that of the rest of the Asia Pacific region. A Singaporean woman can now expect to live until 84, versus 66 in 1960; men up from 62 in 1960 to 79 years. The newborn mortality rate/1,000 live births decline from 5 in the 1990s to 1 in 2009; the U.K., Australia, and Canada also had a mortality rate of five in the 1990s, declining to three in the U.K. and Australia, and four in Canada and the U.S. Maternal mortality rates fell from 86 in 1950 to 12 in 1975 and 3 in 2008. Singapore has fewer doctors/10,000 than the U.S., about the same # of hospital beds. Heart-attack rates are higher in Singapore.

While achieving these healthcare results, Singapore also was in the process of transforming itself from a low-income country with poor health outcomes to one with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. It's healthcare approach is that of individual responsibility, supported by an enabling state, vs. a mixture of private and public insurance in the U.S., a state approach to both healthcare finance and operations as in the U.K., and public-private partnerships of Germany and Japan. A central issue for any approach is providing excellent care for the elderly at an affordable cost.

The People's Action Party (PAP) has been in power since its 1965 independence from Malaysia, creating sustained political stability, and constancy of purpose and action throughout government. At that time its population was heavily urbanized and totaled 2 million, now in 2016 it is almost 6 million. Author Haseltine asserts that he's also observed an unusual degree of cooperation among governmental departments that made possible formulation of policies that reach across departments.

Population health was not a top priority at the start of independence. International recognition of its independence, a strong defense program, and the economy were - health ranked sixth in priorities, also behind housing and education. The initial focus was on public health - first proper sanitation, controlling infectious diseases, and clean water, then implementing a vaccination program, and access to basic medications and clean food. GDP grew from just under S$8.5 billion in 1964, to over S$50 billion in 1983, and almost S$300 billion in 2011. As part of the social fabric, the government also built a system that promotes a sense of fairness and well-being. Subsidies were provided for education, housing and public health, as well as medical care and pensions.

During British colonial rule the Central Provident Fund (CPF) has been set up as a compulsory savings program for workers' retirement. Individuals put 5% of wages into the fund, matched by their employers. The accumulated money could be withdrawn at age 55. After independence, contribution levels were increased (16% for employers, 20% for employees - decreasing after age 50) and funds were allowed to be used for home-buying (boosting political and social stability). The CPF helps control costs by instilling in patients a sense of responsibility about their healthcare spending. Those funds have since also been supplemented by a medical insurance program and a safety net. The Education Ministry also took the lead in educating young women about important health topics.

Another early action was developing a network of satellite outpatient dispensaries and maternal/child health clinics - one-stop centers for immunizations, health promotion, health screening, well-women programs, family planning services, nutritional advice, psychiatric counseling, dental care, pharmaceutical, x-ray, clinical laboratory, and even home-nursing and rehab services for non-ambulatory patients. Now the clinics are increasingly focused on chronic disease management, and home-nursing/rehab care have been moved to community hospitals and private nursing homes. Originally services were free, but that changed per Lee Kuan Yew's experience with NHS in the U.K. A 50 cent fee was imposed, doubled during public holidays.

Before 1960, there were less than 50 medical specialists to serve Singapore's two million citizens. This has since been augmented by the government sending the best public-sector doctors to the best medical institutions around the world for training. In 2009, 1,750 doctors practicing in Singapore were foreign trained, half of newly-recruited doctors are foreign-trained.

Prior to independence, many lived in unhygienic and crowded squatter settlements. Only 95 lived in government flats. Today, almost 85% live in government-provided flats. Starting in the mid-1980s, Singapore began focusing on disease prevention through healthy lifestyles. Exercise corners were built in all public housing, smooth pavements for people to walk and job on.

The government regulates the number and type of doctors who can practice in the country, as well as the type and number of private insurance programs available. (First-dollar coverage is frowned upon.) Public hospitals are allowed to compete against each other; they're still owned by the Ministry of Health. Singapore's heath care plan seems like an excellent system of health care funding that could actually work in the USA, except for the chapter on CONTROLLING COSTS. The medical mafia is currently harvesting billions or trillions of dollars by keeping hospital costs as high as possible. High costs fund huge "Wall Street" salaries and bonuses for hospital administrators and fund lucrative kickbacks for hospital supplier chains which are more often than not, family businesses of the hospital administrators or their relatives.

For example a toothbrush may cost a hospital $10.00, a bottle of shampoo might cost $15.00. The real cost to the supplier is .25 cents and 90 cents respectively. These exorbitant costs are passed on to the consumer, the patient, and the health care program and the mafias get the profit. No mafia easily gives up power because power=profit. By these methods it is possible for a man with little education to make as much money as a highly skilled doctor. His job is eventually passed on to another family member, so the big money can be kept within the control of the family. This is how US hospitals are run today. Singapore has evidently found ways to make such nepotism transparent by posting hospital bills online. They have also managed to somehow protect their investigators from assassination by the medical mafia. Perhaps someone needs to write a book on how US hospitals get away with this and how we can eliminate future medical mafias.

Suits for the Space Pioneers

In Russia, the need for suits to be worn in the upper atmosphere, developed in the 1930:ies, engendered the suits to be used in spacecrafts, outside spacecrafts and on the Moon. Naturally, the use of a protective garment inside the space cabin was the first usage, Juri Gagarin wore such a garment on his historic flight. Even today the protective garment is the iconic spacesuit, which we see Cosmonaut wearing as their uniforms for the trip off the Earth. Suits for extravehicular activities, EVA, are quite different. The Soviet Union, of course, never made it to the lunar surface, but had a cosmonaut, probably Alexei Leonov, made a landing, he would have been dressed for the occasion. After all, the first Space Walk ever was also a first testing of a garment to be worn on the Moon, by the man who was supposed to wear it!

The space suit technology, as developed in the Soviet Union, was even applicable to our canine friends, some of which did ballistic flights into space dressed more or less like the dog Milou in Herg�s "Tin-Tin on the Moon". Thus we know where to turn if we want to walk our dogs on the Moon.

When Westerners started to fly in space alongside the Soviets, later Russians, in Saljut, Mir and International Space Station, it was as had inhabitants from different planets met. Now we may appreciate all those differences in technical culture as exemplified in the space suits of the Cosmonauts. There is, of course all the common ground resulting from like problems demanding like solutions, but overlying we see these subtle differences arising from different technical and engineering usages of two different cultures.

The book is co-authored by some of the actual developers of space suits in the then Soviet Union, later Russia, and thus as authoritative on the subject as can be. Fascinatingly, also, the historical developments inside the Soviet Union/Russia and internationally, reflect in much that the space suit developers had to contend with.

The scope of common activities betveen the Russians and the West European ESA was news to this rewiewer. We also note, that the Chinese "taikonauts" wear protective suits designed by the nowadays "Zvezda Development and Production Company". We also read of the challenge of rendering original technical texts in Russian into readable English, and concomitant difficulties inherent in the fact that, not only is translation of language required, but even the transliteration from one system of letters, i.e. Cyrillic, into our Roman alphabet poses its own problems and pitfalls. On the whole, the endeavour has been crowned with success. The system of measurements are, thankfully, the same on both sides of this barrier of language and glyphs.

All in all fascinating facts from a space program now slowly opening itself to inquisitive Western eyes. Great hopes for the future is embodied in the prospects of joint developments of the advanced spacesuits for space station EVA and the lunar and martian surfaces.

Russian Spacesuits

This is an excellent book with details not before shown outside the formerly closed confines of the old Soviet space program, except in various technical society papers. It has many excellent b&w photos and diagrams of Russian spacesuits from the SK-1, used for Vostok, up to the most modern Russian investigations of Mars EVA suits. The text is somewhat general in content though well written. It is also done in the typical style of Russian/English transliteration. Readers in the West, if they have not previously read any Russian technical papers, may find the transliteration hard to follow at times; but, this does not detract from the value of Mr. Ibramov's good work. If I had any complaint about the book it would be two items. First, the book lacks some technical detail in specific areas, so it sometimes creates more questions than it answers. If I did not already have a background in pressure suits some explanations would have confused me. The inclusion of a few explanatory drawings could have avoided this. Second, while the book gives credit, for the first time, as to which designers at Zvzeda created various general concepts, it does not often shed light on specific contributions, or the dynamimics involved in individual contributions. Nevertheless,I recomend this book. It is a MUST for your library. If the reader wants a technical look at Russian spacesuits I recommend "Pressure Suits and Systems For Work In The Open Cosmos" by Abramov, Severin, Stoklitsky and Sharipov. It is, however, a nearly impossible to find textbook.

Dressing for vacuum

Spacesuits should be of renewed interest with the upcoming private space tourist ventures.

I bought this book after I had the opportunity to examine, hands-on, a Russian SOKOL rescue suit. What struck me was the sheer simplicity of the design and I wanted to know more about this suit.

This book provides much of that background, plus that of the famous Orlan EVA suits and others in the history of the Russian space program.

Compared to the related books on US Spacesuits (Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration), it is remarkable how different Russian suits are, and how much more conservative their designs are. Russian suits, like their spacecraft are relatively stable designs undergoing incremental improvements, probably in response to the much fewer resources available to them for development.

The book covers the development well, although I did not notice any mention of ideas borrowed from US suits, whereas the book on US spacesuits has a wry mention of the remarkable similarity of some US suit components to Russian ones.

As with the US spacesuit book, the same comments on the lack of color illustrations and technical details apply.
