Think you know video games? Think again...

I've been playing video games since the mid 80's. I thought I knew a lot about the games and their histories. This book showed me just how little I actually knew.

The book is packed with excellent bits of history from simple things like "What was the FIRST interactive video game?" (hint: it wasn't "Pong") to the "fun-filled soap opera" with the long-haired guy from Ion Storm :).

The good ole' consoles are covered as well. It's amazing how much drama transpired when the Nintendo was released and also just how many clones (successful and failures) came before and after it.

Lets not forget the backstabbing among former friends and associates all in the name of the mighty dollar. Video games aren't violent, it's the people that make them haha.

If you're looking for action, drama, suspense, and comedy in the video game world, then this is for you. It really delivers as "The Greatest Moments in Video Game History". It really is a fun and informative read. A must for any video game fan.

Great facts but not all are trustworthy!

This book kept me hooked on all the details that and facts presented in it. However, I was turned down when I noticed that some of its sources came from Wikipedia. Although many facts were interesting, I felt that some of those facts are not trustworthy. However, it does give you better insight unto everything that was happening in the video game industry. So if you want interesting facts this is a must buy.

Riddled With Mistakes

This book was full of lots of interesting facts, but I have found a lot of errors and I haven't even read the whole thing. It said that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released in 2008, which it wasn't. It also said that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was released in two different years. Those are just two of this books many errors.

Wild equines have been seriously overlooked by academic researchers. This book provides a fair start to overcome the gap, with excellent compilations on the social organization of wild horses, zebras and assess, their ecological niches, and genetics. The chapter on reintroduction of wild euquids is particularly fascinating. Unfortunately, the section on management of free-roaming horses in the U.S. relies heavily on information provided by the Bureau of Land Management and ignores data from wild horse and burro advocates and independent researchers. The book also misses an opportunity to explore the debate as to whether mustangs are a returned native species or, as the government claims, feral animals, a designation that dooms them to mistreatment and misunderstanding..

Good content, poor Kindle formatting.

Good content, appropriate for folks with scientific or engineering backgrounds. There are lots of equations, as there should be, but there are also good explanations to accompany the equations. Covers statistics and probability. I found it a great single book to have on this topic.

I would have given this book 4 stars, but the Kindle formatting is poor (Kindle PC App and Kindle iPad App). The equations are kind of readable, but the overall formatting isn't nearly as nice as the print version. Authors: why don't you go through the trouble to format your Kindle books appropriately? It can be done, and there are lots of examples where a Kindle science or math book is as good as the print version. Its wrong that people have to buy heavy and expensive print books when a good Kindle book would be better.

In Starving for Salvation, Michelle Lelwica challenges traditional theories by introducing and exploring the spiritual dimensions of anorexia, bulimia, and related problems. Drawing on a range of sources that include previously published interviews with sufferers of eating disorders, Lelwica claims that girls and women starve, binge, and purge their bodies as a means of coping with the pain and injustice of their daily lives. She provides an incisive analysis of contemporary American culture, arguing that our dominant social values and religious legacies produce feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction in girls and women.
Trapped in a society that ignores and denies their spiritual needs, girls and women construct a network of symbols, beliefs, and rituals around food and their bodies. Lelwica draws a parallel between the patriarchal legacy of Christianity, which associates women with sin and bodily cravings, and the cultural preference for a thin female body. According to Lelwica, these complimentary forces form a popular salvation myth that encourages girls and women to fixate on their bodies and engage in disordered eating patterns. While this myth provides a sense of meaning and purpose in the face of uncertainty and injustice, Lelwica demonstrates that such rigid and unhealthy devotion to the body only deepens the spiritual void that women long to fill.
Although Lelwica presents many disturbing facts about the origins of eating disorders, she also suggests positive ways that our society can nourish the creative and spiritual needs of girls and women. The first step, however, is to acknowledge that female preoccupation with thinness and food signifies a strong desire for fulfillment. Until we recognize and contest the religious legacies and cultural values that perpetuate eating disorders, many women will continue to turn to the most accessible symbolic and ritual resources available to them--food and their bodies--in an attempt to satiate their profound spiritual hunger.

Michelle M. Lelwica grew up in rural Minnesota and earned her Doctorate of Theology at Harvard Divinity School. She is currently Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at St. Mary's College of California.

Insightful & Beneficial Book for Sophisticated Readers

This insightful analysis of the connection between unmet spiritual needs and eating problems has great potential benefit for clinicians, theorists, sociologists, spiritual leaders and any fairly sophisticated reader interested in issues related to spirituality, women's issues, American culture, and issues related to food and body image. The author does an exceptional job at synthesizing observations, statistics, and theory from a variety of fields in support of her thesis that "eating disorders both mask and reveal deep spiritual hungers." I have encountered the truth of her thesis in my own personal experience as well as in my work as a psychotherapist with girls and women.
I especially appreciate her articulation of eating "disorders" (bulimia & anorexia) as "extreme incidences" of socially sanctioned attitudes and behaviors regarding food and the female body. She proposes a view that "recognizes a continuum of eating problems, from the exteme incidences of anorexia and bulimia to the more common but related problems of compulsive eating, chronic dieting, and body-discontent" and sees the "differences as a matter of degree rather than kind."(p. 19). While not "normalizing" eating disorders, she demonstrates the "logic" of why a girl or woman without another source of meaning and purpose (a conscious spirituality) might develop eating disordered behaviors in an attempt to fulfill the culturally promoted "meaning and purpose" for women: that of a slender/fat-free body.
I think this book is written for a fairly sophisticated audience. I consider myself to be such a reader--especially in this field. Yet at times I found myself needing to go back and re-read sections. And much of the reading is fairly labor intensive. Definitely not a "lite" read, but well worth the effort for those invested in the theoretical and clinical issues around "the spiritual dimensions of eating problems among American girls and women."

Lelwica provides a comprehensive discussion of other work and makes good use of the insights in this growing literature; at the same time, her attention to spiritual and theological issues enhances and deepens her analysis. The result is a provocative and compassionate book that gives us a new angle of vision on the subject.

About the Author

Dr. Adrian Kaehler is a senior scientist at Applied Minds Corporation. His current research includes topics in machine learning, statistical modeling, computer vision and robotics. Adrian received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Columbia university in 1998. Adrian has since held positions at Intel Corporation and the Stanford University AI Lab, and was a member of the winning Stanley race team in the DARPA Grand Challenge. He has a variety of published papers and patents in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and robotics.

Dr. Gary Rost Bradski is a consulting professor in the CS department at Stanford University AI Lab where he mentors robotics, machine learning and computer vision research. He is also Senior Scientist at Willow Garage http://www.willowgarage.com, a recently founded robotics research institute/incubator. He has a BS degree in EECS from U.C. Berkeley and a PhD from Boston University. He has 20 years of industrial experience applying machine learning and computer vision spanning option trading operations at First Union National Bank, to computer vision at Intel Research to machine learning in Intel Manufacturing and several startup companies in between. Gary started the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencvlibrary/ ), the statistical Machine Learning Library (MLL comes with OpenCV), and the Probabilistic Network Library (PNL). OpenCV is used around the world in research, government and commercially. The vision libraries helped develop a notable part of the commercial Intel performance primitives library (IPP http://tinyurl.com/36ua5s). Gary also organized the vision team for Stanley, the Stanford robot that won the DARPA Grand Challenge autonomous race across the desert for a $2M team prize and helped found the Stanford AI Robotics project at Stanford http://www.cs.stanford.edu/group/stair/ working with Professor Andrew Ng. Gary has over 50 publications and 13 issued patents with 18 pending. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife and 3 daughters and bikes road or mountains as much as he can.

About the Author
David Northrup teaches courses on the history of sub-Saharan Africa, Atlantic history, globalization, and world history at Boston College. His research has dealt with pre-colonial Nigeria, early colonial Congo, the Atlantic slave trade, Asian and African indentured labor migration, and African encounters with Europe in the pre-colonial era. His work has included British, Belgian, and French colonialism in Africa. He served as President of the World History Association during 2004 and 2005.

Europeans Through African Eyes

The topic of African history cries out for clarity and insight. As I've mentioned before in this space, the number one attitude of American's towards Africa is "Ignorance" followed closely at number two with "Ignorance." You can't really blame people, finding out the truth about what happened in Africa is a task complicated by contemporary racial politics on three different continents. I know that Africa has lots of social problems and such, but it's hard to look at a continent with more then a billion people (and climbing) and say "Oh- what a disaster." You want to see a disaster? Check out Russia- negative birthrate? That is failure for you. My take is that people just need to chill out about Africa and try to appreciate some of the astonishing diversity and cultural power that comes out of there.

Africa's Discovery of Europe is a good continent wide introduction to the relationship between Africa and Europe. It is, as much as possible, written from the perspective of Africans and comes with ample footnotes for further reading. Northrup's main thesis is to dispel the "ignorant african" stereotype in terms of their trading relationships with Europeans. In the words of Northrup "Africans got what they wanted out of Europeans." During the time period covered in this book, the Europeans are hardly dominant. From the Portugese traders of the 15th century onwards, the Europeans existed on the fringes of a sprawling continent with it's own empires, nations and peoples. Africa was a place where slavery was already existent, and most of the slaves who made it to the New World tended to spend time as the property of other Africans before they were actually sold across the sea. Northrup even notes that many freed slaves remarked that their main issue was not with slavery, but with the fact that their African owners sold them out of Africa.
