For a fiddler who has a grasp of the basics

I've had this book/cd for a number of years and should point out there is a newer edition available. The only reason I'm reviewing it now is to offer a contrasting view from that of another reviewer whose opinion I fundamentally disagree with.
McNevin's book competes with a number of folk fiddle offerings and relies on the reader to have some basic understanding of music nomenclature and perhaps some elementary playing experience. While definitely a beginner's book it doesn't adequately address fundamental stringed instrument issues such as tone production and bowing technique. To be fair, few genre specific books do. If you are coming to this style as a total neophyte and are a self learner (i.e., no music teacher) you'd do well to acquire "Book One" of any of the violin pedagogue study guides (such as the "ABC" series) or one of the basic fiddling method books that stress sight reading as a necessary musical skill.
Once past the most elementary stage, McNevin's book comes into it's own and offers introductory material in a more accelerated fashion and moves quickly into simple, then more complex jigs, reels, and slow airs. Along the way he introduces stylistic differences between various geographic locales and briefly touches on a few of Ireland's legendary fiddlers. With the included cd various musical elements are introduced and illustrated (ornamentation, cuts, and rolls) and then incorporated in repertoire pieces. Another big plus for this book is that the type face, font size, and notation engraving is particularly easy to read and larger than that available in most other publications; a welcome factor to those of us a little longer in the tooth.
I would close by mentioning that just about everything here is available in other method books. A recommended alternative at the more basic level would be Mel Bay's "Learn to Play Irish Fiddle" by Phillip John Berthoud. And if McNevin's book proves a little too elementary you might look at "The Irish Fiddle Book" by Matt Cranich. Both are excellent for their intended audience. Additionally there are a number of anthologies available that contain session tunes; a recent publication by Pete Cooper ("Mel Bay Irish Fiddle Solos") is one recommendation. However, the material contained in this book by McNevin is a good start on repertoire building. Again, this is a viable tutorial and I recommend it, but in the end all method books have a limited audience for whom they are most appropriate. As long as you have some facility with the violin, or add some adjunct beginner material from another source, McNevin's book is a solid entry in the field.
