The Yogini's Eye: Comprehensive Introduction to Buddhist Tantra, Volume I: Systemization and Interpretation introduces a new translation series, Classics of the Early Sakya, which will focus on the extensive literature of the Sakya Lamdre lineage of the Hevajra Tantra cycle of revelation. This first volume of introduction is the earliest book of its type and comprehensive treatment of the subject matter to have been written, and initiated the scholarly study of Tibetan Buddhist Tantra. Subsequent studies in all lineages were built on the foundation established by this book.
The Yogini's Eye has served as the introductory textbook for the study of Sakya Tantra continuously for over 800 years. Over the centuries, the textbook has been supplemented by a total of fifteen commentaries and study guides written by the most learned scholars of the Sakya tradition, including Lama Dampa Sonam Gyaltsen (1312-1375), Yeshe Gyaltsen (1300's-1406), Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo (1382-1450), Lowo Khenchen Sonam Lhundrup (1456-1532), Ngorchen Konchok Lhundrup (1497-1547), Amezhap Ngawang Kunga Sonam (1597-1659), and Dezhung Chopel Jamyang Kunga Namgyal (1880's- mid-1950's). This first English edition contains the translation of thirteen of these study guides, excluding all repetitive sections, inserted into the original book in the appropriate context.

Impressive translation of key classical Tibetan tantric work

"The Yogini's Eye: Comprehensive Introduction to Buddhist Tantra" is a foundational text for Tantric study in the Sakya lineage--one of the four major Tibetan Buddhist lineages. It is a very comprehensive introduction and key to Buddhist tantric literature. There are sections on distinguishing Tantric practice from other Buddhist practice systems, descriptions of the four major classes of tantra, discussion of the origins of tantra in India and an explanations of some of the terminology unique to tantric practice. It was first composed in the 12th century and many extensive commentaries on it were written by later masters.
The current volume was translated by Wayne Verrill under the direction of his teacher, Ngor Thartse Ken Rinpoche who was one of the great teachers who left Tibetan after the Chinese communist invasion in 1959. The translation is very readable which is not easy to accomplish given the sheer difficulty of rendering classical Tibetan Buddhist texts into understandable English. In addition, the translation is extensively footnoted with an emphasis on reference to works that are available in English. In my estimation, based on many years of working with Tibetan Buddhist texts, the translation demonstrates a high level of care and scholarship which is particularly impressive considering Mr. Verrill is not a professional academic.
Those looking for works on pop Buddhism or mysticism will probably find this work difficult and boring. However, for those with a sincere interest in understanding some of the unique features of Buddhist Tantra as a path to the ultimate truth of being, this volume is an invaluable resource. As Mr. Verrill states in his Introduction, "This book is has been written for the serious student of Tibetan Buddhism who does not read Tibetan, yet wishes to gain appreciation for richness and depth of meaning of the classical literature." I would say that the present volume admirable fulfills this purpose.
Highly recommend to those for whom it is intended.

Excellent translation of Early Buddhist Tantra

This translation is not a casual read. It is a work written in Tibetan about 800 years ago when Buddhist Tantra was not as established and accepted as it is now. It offers profound insights and varying views of Tantra. It provides exhaustive references to commentaries and related materials, many in English, which is invaluable for the non-Tibetan reading student. This work has been used as an introductory text for centuries. I believe it is the only English translation available. One of the translators, Ngor Thartse Khenpo Sonam Gyatso was traditionally trained in Tibet and was Abbot of Ngor Monastery in Tibet before the Chinese invasion. The Yogini's Eye is invaluable for anyone interested in Buddhist Tantra. It is a work that I will be referencing frequently in the coming years.

Excellent book

I'm very impressed with this book. I would highly recommend this for any serious practitioner of Vajrayana or any Tibetan Buddhism scholar. It brought me a lot of clarity around the history of the Sakya lineage. The quality of the translation is very high and I was impressed that the whole text was read to the translator by Ngor Thartse Khenpo Sonam Gyatso. This quote by the translator says it all to me, "This book has been written for the serious student of Tibetan Buddhism who does not read the Tibetan language, yet wishes to gain appreciation for the richness and depth of meaning of the classic literature.”
