Pathologies of Rational Choice Theory, a book written by Donald Green and Ian Shapiro and published in 1994, excited much controversy among political scientists and promoted a dialogue that was printed in a double issue of the journal Critical Review in 1995. This new book reproduces thirteen essays from that journal written by senior scholars in the field, along with an introduction by the editor of the journal, Jeffrey Friedman, and a rejoinder to the essays by Green and Shapiro. The scholars - who include John Ferejohn, Morris P. Fiorina, Stanley Kelley, Jr., Robert E. Lane, Peter C. Ordeshook, Norman Schofield, and Kenneth A. Shepsle - criticize, agree with, or build on Green and Shapiro's critique. Together the essays provide an interesting and accessible way of focusing on completing approaches to the study of politics and the social sciences.

About the Author

Naval gazing

I partly agree with the other review in that this book is essentially a glorified exercise in naval gazing and irrelevant to most people. However, that alone isn't a reason to attack the book. I do take away points because the book is too much a knee-jerk defense of rational choice against a knee-jerk attack on rational choice. If you haven't read Green and Shapiro's book critiquing rational choice, you'll feel like you're missing half the story. Some of the defenses of rational choice are a bit superficial in and of themselves (alleging that Green and Shapiro don't provide a sufficient alternative). If you're heavily invested in this debate, this book is probably worth owning, but even for other political scientists it's probably a bit superfluous.

If this isn't an academic debate... what is?

This is one of those books that is of interest only to a small, small percentage of people who are not just trying to USE rational choice for an end, but fairly interested in it as an intellectual device. As the review above indicates, it is a rejoinder to Green and Shapiro's work, and a capable one at that. ...
As one might imagine, this is not a book for pleasure reading so much as a group of scholars commenting on the minutia of an argument that only affected .01% of the US population. For more general reading on public choice, check out Muller's Public Choice II or Perspectives on Public Choice.

Her child will have a good life because adoption is available only to the finest of Hitler's Elite. Not only this, the doctor says but during her pregnancy, Helga will have the finest food and medical care available. And, instead of a life of shame, she will be honored for her efforts in producing a perfect Aryan child for the new world that Hitler is in the process of creating. Then after the baby is born, the Lebensborn will take the child and assume all future responsibilities releasing Helga to live her life without the burden of a fatherless offspring. In her desperation, all of this sounded perfect to Helga, that was of course before she felt life stir within her womb. However, by the time this occurred it was already too late. She had already moved into Steinhoring, home for the Lebensorn, and there was no possibility of turning back. The papers were signed. She could not escape. Hitler owned her unborn child.
On a cold day in January Helga's little girl came into the world. But instead of being sheltered by her mother's arms, she was torn away by the nurses at the home for the Lebensborn and thrust into a treacherous world where the very people sworn to protect her were not what they seemed. The little girl was growing, and she was amongst some of the cruelest people on earth and subjected daily to the ideology of the Third Reich. But when Hitler became convinced that he was indestructible and, went to war on two fronts dividing his army, Germany began to fall. The Nazi's became fearful as America entered the war joining Churchill against them in the west, while Stalin a formidable enemy with the brutal Russian winters on his side, ripped them apart in the east. And so, the tables turned on the Third Reich. The cruel Nazi's, who believed they could not be defeated were about to swallow their pride and surrender at the feet of the Allies. The superior race would prove to be inferior after all. Hitler's elite would run for cover, some would commit suicide; some would be tried in Nuremberg for crimes against humanity, while others would escape with their tails tucked between their legs and head for South America or other friendly ports. But God had other plans for Helga's tiny innocent child, who had been born on that January morning. The child's life was about to change in a very strange but significant way. Instead of becoming whom and what the Nazi's had hoped to create, this child would be befriended and nurtured by the most unexpected people.

Riveting storyline, but...

This is the second book I've read by Roberta Kagan (1st was "All My Love, Detrick"), which completely captured my attention, with very realistic characters and a storyline evoking strong emotions on almost every level. This book was no less riveting and I cannot WAIT until "The Promised Land" is published! On the other hand, I must explain the reason for not giving this book a full 5 stars...the grammar and spelling were just atrocious! I found myself being constantly distracted from the storyline due to the number of spelling errors, commas in the wrong place (causing awkward pauses), or missing entirely, as well as apostrophes used incorrectly. Normally, I can overlook this aspect, if it is an occasional occurrence, but it was quite frustrating. I hope the next edition will be edited more carefully, as this seems to be (in my humble opinion) the only aspect preventing this author from becoming a best-seller. Review by Terry Dover

Misspellings and grammatical errors are distractions

The plot was intriguing and I quickly scanned the book to reach the end, but the numerous (at least in the hundreds) misspellings, comma splices, incomplete sentences etc etc were a terrible distraction. I also found some elements of the plot a little contrived. The author may have been inspired by Sophie's Choice when Zofia became a maid for Manfred's household at Auschwitz and took up residence in the basement. I also found Manfred's quick rise a little unbelievable, although from other reading, I know that there were many young people who rose quickly in the SS. As well, I didn't like the ending where the author left us hanging - waiting for the next book to come out. That being said, from reading other books about the Holocaust, I found the descriptions of the horrors of Auschwitz and the Nazi atrocities in general to be accurate.

Good, but.....

I enjoyed this book, but I felt that it could have ended much sooner than it did. Near the end it seemed to drone on and on. Also, there are so many typographical and grammatical errors. Where was the proofreader??? Very disappointed to see that at the end the reader gets no resolution to the character's journey but instead is urged to read the next book to find out! I do not like cliffhangers and was quite upset to see this. I'm not even sure if I can dive into the next book. Disappointed!

Yet another fantastic story by Ms. Buroker!

If you haven't read the first 3 books in Lindsay Buroker's Dragon Blood series, I suggest you do so before picking this one up. Patterns picks up immediately after Blood Charged (book 3) ends and books 1 and 2 bring together the 4 main characters.

As with the other books, I felt as if I was watching the plot unfold in person. The writing has a smooth flow to it and I was able to read the entire book in a few hours, mostly because I simply could not put it down. This book is an exciting adventure to an island full of secrets and danger. The characters are extremely relatable, and you will be full of empathy as they deal with their emotions, relationships, and the trials of survival and success.

Magic, a dragon, action, adventure, and even some smooching! You will love this series! I also highly recommend reading the full Emperor's Edge series by Lindsay Buroker (the EE books, Salt and Swords, Encrypted books) if you enjoyed the Dragon Blood series.

Every detail plus a joy to read

I encountered Centering Prayer by watching the video Thomas Keating: A Rising Tide Of Silence, which was fascinating. Wanting to learn more about it, I read a couple of Fr. Keating's books, but for me Cynthia Bourgeault's is the best book on the subject. She is a blessing, a highly spiritual woman (a reverend), as well as a talented writer, and the book not only explains the nuts and bolts of Centering Prayer but does it in a way that is a joy to read and very inspirational. Highest recommendation.

Develops love and beauty in one's heart

Coming from the school of concentrative methods (esoteric meditation), meditation usually proceeds from the cataphatic stage, using a seed thought or mantra, then into the climax, which the author calls the "apophatic" stage - the state of complete surrender to the inner silence of the Soul. This is also the method I learned from my earlier training in the system of Christian meditation by Fr. Nicolas Caballero, CMF. However, Rev. Bourgeault, using the tradition of Fr Thomas Merton and T.Keating, teaches in this work that it is possible to directly jump into this surrendered or apophatic state through constant practice. I'm really struggling since all my life I've been moulded to make the mind to be in conscious control of the process. While in centering prayer, surrender is achieved using the purity of heart - "being like little children"- before the Great Presence. Theoretically, using Eastern mystical terminology, this is a Yin approach to our inner centre, whereas, energy cultivation practices and those that use concentrated attention is "Yang" approach. I believe this balance should be achieved if true inner awakening is to be achieved. This insightful manual will be a good guide for me to start this journey. I'm grateful to have bumped into this book. Thanks to the author.

Surprised!

I was vaccinated against Christianity by Charismatic, Evangelical, Fundamentalism years ago and would never have found this book had I not found another book by Cynthia, loved it, and then discovered to my amazement that this vital, spiritually alive, person is an Episcopalian Priest! (Had I have realized this to begin with, I probably would never have read her book and that would have been my great loss.)

I downloaded three other books of Cynthia's onto my Kindle, (this one included,) and wow! I feel like purchasing thousands and thousands of hard copies of this book and personally delivering them to every minister of religion of every denomination and faith in the world!

As a student of Eckhart Tolle I am familiar with meditative technique leading to stillness and presence, but Cynthia describes so simply and beautifully that from stillness, there are even deeper depths to "Allowing God's Presence".

Don't be expecting epiphanies or overdoses of bliss. This book isn't about that. It IS about allowing the intangible, unknowable, Otherness we commonly call God to be within our lives in a way that transforms us and our lives over time. It's only hindsight that discloses His footprints in our souls, but they will be etched there in gold for all to see.

This book and the deceptively simple technique it contains is transformational.

Every person, from any or no faith, who is sincerely searching a deeper experience of the Divine in their life must read this book and do this.

Divided is a twist on the usual heart transplant love stories/movies I've seen over the years. This is not a simple New Adult love story, though. It is so much more - this is a futuristic, supernatural novel. I don't think I've read a New Adult novel like this before and I found it quite intriguing. Mishca's heart transplant sets everything into motion, but it's not the heart of the real plot of the story, which is revealed later on. I knew there was a supernatural element to the story, but couldn't tell exactly what form it would take. I mean I thought ghosts were involved, but that wasn't the case haha. This is one of those novels you can't write too much about the plot or you will give away the story. You just have to read it for yourself. I feel the author could have been more descriptive. I had no idea what CRE stood for until it was mentioned again in the book. It was kind of confusing. Also, the transition between one chapter to another could have been better. Sometimes a couple of months would pass by and you wouldn't know it until the main character mentioned it out of nowhere. I didn't even realize a couple of months in the story passed until a lot later! Anyway, I found the plot intriguing and will continue to read the series. I wonder what the story is with Ryder and Neissa, Mishca's best friend. Their back story is yet to be revealed. I'm sure they have a supernatural thing going on as well.

Not sure if want...? But...um.

There are two kinds of books, when it comes to characters staying with you after the final page: the ones who wrap themselves so deeply into your brain you’d swear that just for a moment, they were real…and the ones who are stuck there as your brain keeps trying desperately to figure out what the hell just happened.

DIVIDED is 100% in the second category.

I love the premise–it’s one of the reasons I picked up the ARC from NetGalley to read. Mishca Richardson is a young woman in need of a heart transplant, made more difficult by the fact that Mishca was adopted, and in a way that keeps any biological information about her and her birth family rather hidden. In the early pages of the book, Mishca receives word she’s gotten a transplant match and is rushed off to the hospital–where everything starts getting strange.

The beginning is excellent. The new heart seems to have given Mishca superpowers: she’s super fast, incredibly strong, and has an internal voice with the instincts of a super soldier. Add in an attractive young man in the shape of Ryder Madson, and you have all the trappings of a lovely story.

But that’s were the book starts falling apart.

I won’t go into details for fear of spoilers, but my overwhelming feeling is that there are too many plot lines going on at once. If we’d stayed with just Mishca and her super-heart trying to balance the oddity of her existence with wanting a normal relationship, I would have enjoyed it more. But we get a side plot with Mishca’s heart, a side plot for Ryder, one for his roommates, and so by the end for the big reveal on Mishca’s main story, I was so confused by everything else that I’d run out of suspension of disbelief. Add on that it blatantly ran up to a sequel, and I couldn’t manage to be impressed. I was just lost.

Also, as is so often the case, Ryder and Mishca’s relationship moves WAY too fast. Given that Mishca is written to be someone who’s never had a relationship before, has no basis for any of that, and has been a bit shy for most of her life, I can identify very strongly with that–though I’ve never needed a heart transplant. So speaking as someone who’s been somewhat in her shoes, it all seems a bit much to believe. However, this isn’t specific to this book, so it’s more a frustration with the genre.

I edged it up to a three-star review because while I wasn’t overly impressed, it was relatively well-written, and I did enjoy Mishca and Ryder. I’d be interested in seeing how the myriad plot lines pan out–though I may wait until I can borrow it somewhere, given how small my book buying budget is.

Overall, this is a cute little NA romance with good potential, if a bit buried.

Mishca is a teenager who, all of her life, has been sheltered by her adoptive parents due to a heart defect that requires a heart transplant. Finally, at the end of her senior year, she finds out that she has a heart, but what she doesn’t know if that her life will never be the same.
When I first started reading this book I didn’t think that it was in the paranormal realm, but I was surprised and happy to find out that it was. As an avid reader of the paranormal this book was right up my alley. I would also like to say that as a reader who is not a big fan of first person POV, I found that the author used first person quite well. It was easy to follow her thoughts and transition into her many nightmares.
I do not want to give away the book, but I did not see this plot twist coming. When Mishca started to struggle with her new powers (or abnormalities) I immediately thought about super hero, and I wasn’t alone. But after everything she has gone through I was excited to find out that Ryder ( pretty much the love of her life) has abilities of his own and I hope that will make her feel like less of an outcast as the series progresses. The author, in my opinion, did a great job or growing the characters especially Mishca and Ryder. Ryder is such a loving person and he is so proper that you can’t help but adore him. I see him as more British then Australian in my mind. Mishca is so confused and allows a lot of guilt to guide her actions, but she always manages to find a way to do the right thing. She also cares very deeply about those that are close to her. I don’t quite know what Sophitia is up to, but I’m sure it is nothing good and I still don’t like her.
I think one of the few things that I did not like about the book was bringing in Colin. The book was a pretty good length and I just felt like he was thrown in for no other reason than to show that something was not quite right with Mishca’s birth. She has enough problems going on in her life without throwing a wedge between her and Ryder. We are already left with the big secret, that he may not forgive her for keeping, to keep us on our toes about their relationship. It was also just a little bit skeevy to me because the age gap was pretty substantial at their ages. I guess I just wasn’t a fan of this part.
In the end I really enjoyed reading this book, but my heart contracted in pain when I realized we wouldn’t be getting all of our answers at the end of the book. Sorry folks, it is a series! And sadly we will have to wait for Shattered to come out. I will be waiting with baited breath, but not very patiently.

You Can't Argue with Facts

It's legible, convenient, durable, water proof, etc.
It's a handy little cheat sheet.
I keep in a binder with the documents for a TI NSpire Calculator.

I was kinda hoping that it would cover microwave transmission parameters. Some of that is on the Circuit Theory/Analysis card.
Still, there was not much on the cards concerning practical impedance matching circuits. You just can't cram everything on a couple or three cards.

All the basics are there.
You should be able to derive the rest.

Can't complain

Stashed this away for reference on projects if anything is forgotten or disputed. No longer need internet if its not available. The quality is good, but the amount of information is overwhelming. Although Wedgwood china now claims an international reputation for luxury and quality, it wasn't always so, as Dolan's first-rate biography elegantly demonstrates. Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795) spent his childhood and youth in a family of struggling potters. From them he not only learned the tools of his future trade but developed a keen sense of ambition that he would use to move beyond his family's struggles to build his own successful business. Dolan presents an inventive youth who performed experiment after experiment in search of new and attractive forms of pottery. One of Wedgwood's earliest achievements was his green ware, vases and other pottery designed in the shape of vegetables. Eventually, he joined forces with Thomas Bentley, and the two, Dolan shows, took the pottery world by storm, selling their wares to both British and foreign royalty, including Catherine the Great. As the business developed, Wedgwood built a factory, and transformed the process of shopping for pottery by holding workshops and demonstrations for customers, an early version of the showroom. Despite illness and the deaths of family members, Dolan's Wedgewood worked ardently to improve his products and increase his sales and wealth. This magisterial biography provides an intimate portrait of Wedgwood the entrepreneur as well as a magnificent glimpse of life in 18th-century British society.

Before his death, in 1795, Josiah Wedgwood managed to get his pottery into the hands of the Queen of England, the Empress of Russia, and the Emperor of China; two centuries later, he is still cited as a model tycoon by no less an authority than Donald Trump. Dolan successfully conveys the reach both of Wedgwood's ambition and of his influence. His company was recognizably modern, employing colorful catalogues, preprinted order forms, corporate espionage, and celebrity endorsements. Dolan also argues that Wedgwood's business was inseparable from his involvement in the philosophical and scientific ferment of his time. Although Etruria, his factory complex, had its Dickensian side (workers died from "potter's rot," a form of silicosis), it was meant to be a model community, with housing, health insurance, and retirement schemes. Wedgwood was among the best chemists of the day, and he responded to market threats by returning to the laboratory in search of innovations.

Excellent book - important topic

Brian writes compellingly and well about this very important story. Some reviewers have objected to his style - I think it's fair to say that there are better written biographies out there, but the fact is that this is the best book available about the life of Josiah Wedgwood and it does its job well.

One ends up with a real sense of who Wedgwood was as well as the historical context in which he lived. What's particularly fascinating, to me, is how similar he feels, in outlook and concerns, with a modern entrepreneur. A bit of a hobby horse of mine - but compare with Steve Jobs - Wedgwood was not just an amazing product innovator - stealing and creating in equal measure - but he also invented the whole concept of high-end retail.

I would love to see more efforts to explain the life of this incredibly important person - in the mean time, thanks to Brian Dolan for an excellent and important piece of work.

We think little of pottery now a days and less than that of the potters who make it. This book will change how you think.

Being from a family of potters, father and grandfather, and myself in my college years, I found this an interesting read. I was surprised to find so much about The Enlightenment in it. It has prompted me to include other books on The Enlightenment on my wishlist.
It was interesting on many levels, industrial revolution, his personality and family, the fame of the name and so on. I would have liked a bit more technology in it, but after all, I was a Chemistry major in college. I realize that most people would not.
There is an old saying " For the want of a nail, a horse shoe was lost, for the want of a horse shoe a horse was lost, for the want of a horse a General was lost, for the want of a General a Battle was lost . . ." and so on until the entire country was lost. In the case of Wedgewood, the exact opposite is true, but you will have to buy this book to find out how and why . . .

This is a great book even if turgidly written--what is striking is not just Wedgwood's genius but how much business resembles what it is now: the need for constant innovation, scientific research, marketing skill, investment in employees, struggling against competitors, financing struggles, international focus, and with health problems that could easily have killed him, A really remarkable man.

Great content, poor copy quality

Todhunter was a prolific author of treatises on a variety of mathematical topics. The title of this book is apt, it does have comprehensive coverage of the mathematical principles and is a great resource for worked examples. The Mathematics is obviously that of the 1800's and looks amazingly applied in contrast to modern Mathematical texts. A surprising problem is the use of a single differential operator symbol for full, partial and virtual derivatives as opposed to the separate symbols that we have come to rely upon in modern texts.

Unfortunately, the copy quality is poor and there are places on almost every page where some of the equations are obscured, often making for serious problems trying to figure out the symbols. Consequently, the rating is an average of 1 start for print quality and 5 stars for content.

5 Star Review for the 6th Edition: "Great book and very detailed in labeling and diagramming the internal mechanisms of a 'Typical' Home door lock. This book was a good refresher on some techniques. I mainly got this book to get a better understanding of how to open door locks more efficiently with power tools, and be more aware of the variety of locks available out there. Just because a certain lock is outdated doesn't mean it's no longer in use. Some people are resistant to changing their locks, and the longer they keep their old locks means lock smiths need to have a good variety of knowledge of all the locks out there in circulation. A great book to read. Its spread out like a physics textbook starting off with vectors and then bringing you into the meat of the lock. No actual physics math required, but some knowledge on torque is a must. LOVE THIS BOOK." (Zen Amazon 2015-07-30)
