Engagement- the downfall of corporate America- is flow

In this book, readers will find the first well-researched proof that engaging with life is within anyone's control and that it is not more easily attained when the task is easy or leisurely. In cross-cultural studies, Csikszentmihalyi and contributors demonstrate that anyone can access the 'flow' state.

Early in his work and writings, this particular book provides descriptions of the optimal experience state that was named 'flow' in later works. The point, in my mind's eye, is that anyone can get there and that external rewards or the quality of the experience are not the critical factors for whether we engage- nor is some innate talent or socioeconomic level.

Csikszentmihalyi's work was the basis of my own work while teaching at Dartmouth Med School and, then, for the work I have done consulting to peak performers on the competitive fields of sports and business, politics, medicine, and law. It is also the basis for The Winner's Way (McGraw-Hill 2004) The Winner's Way : A proven method for achieving your personal best in any situation in which I outline how peak performers in sport get into the zone and how anyone can use three elements within their control to engage with the power of heart, brain - and energy to get it done and to achieve your goals.

Given that this was the start of work on 'flow'- Gallup and Towers and Perrin call it 'engagement', the book stands on its own as a solid 5-star read.

SharePoint 101 for BAs

I seldom review books as I find that other reviews are sufficient. Although that's true for this book , I feel compelled to add my voice to those who find this a great Sharepoint book.

Over the last 6 months or so I've spent some time using or learning SharePoint, as such I have an "okay" idea of what SharePoint is, and an understanding of general end user functionality as well as the business value it provides. However as a Business Analyst it was important for me to understand how Sharepoint components fit together. I've waded through the Microsoft sites, Sharepoint blogs, and two other books but just encountered a list of features and marketing mumbo jumbo. After reading this book, I was able to develop a mental model of Sharepoint 2010, and understand how the major Sharepoint components/concepts fit together to deliver value to users.

If you are a business analyst and want to gain command of sharepoint, I strongly recommend that you start with this book, and then I would strongly recommend Essential SharePoint 2010: Overview, Governance, and Planning (Addison-Wesley Microsoft Technology Series) Thank you Mr. Cawood.

Great for End Users

My company just started using SharePoint 2010 and my team was in the dark on all of the changes we were seeing. In searching for training materials, I found "How to Do Everything" to be a great reference for helping everyone get up to speed and productive quickly. Unlike most "How To" books, this one is easy to get through and thankfully doesn't read like a manual.

There are 11 chapters, each covering a certain feature with an quick overview and some sample exercises. The chapters are also fairly to the point and short, so they're very helpful for someone to get through the most important details in a half hour.

Probably the best part was the section on how to find things using the new ribbon. This was a confusing point to a lot of people when we made the 2010 switch and it does a great job of explaining how to navigate.

Overall, we're having a great experience with it... people in my group have started using their profile pages and our team sites more effectively. A couple folks who had never even set up their profile in years past have suddenly become users. It's a great book to put on everyone's desk to make them feel more comfortable, as a supplement to a training course or before your team has a chance to be trained. Would highly recommend it.

Stephen Cawood's new book on SharePoint 2010 has been written specifically for end users who want to get the most out of their SharePoint 2010 implementation. The book covers a lot of ground, including a history of SharePoint as well as a wealth of practical and often step-by-step information that will help organizations and end users get quickly up to speed on SharePoint in general and the new features and capabilities of SharePoint 2010 in particular. One area that he spends a lot of time is on metadata, where he offers some excellent information on the use and benefit of metadata, specifically the new enterprise managed metadata (EMM) and term store functionality of SharePoint 2010. Chapter 10 titled "Using SharePoint with Client Applications" provides a unique look at SharePoint client technology and the benefits of third party tools in addition to those available from Microsoft.

Stephen provides an interesting, easy to read, and highly practical book on SharePoint 2010. I highly recommend it.

I don't know where the folks at Osborne buy their clothes, but on my planet a pocket is only slightly larger than a hand. I can put my wallet in my pocket. I can carry three or so Zip disks. But I've tried and tried, and I just can't jam in all 600+ pages of Bigelow's PC Technician's Troubleshooting Pocket Reference into any pocket I have. The thing is an inch and a half thick--definitely not pocket-sized. It's satchel-sized. It's put-it-under-the-tire-to-keep-the-trailer-from-rolling-downhill-sized.

Form factors aside, Bigelow's book lives up to its title; it's all troubleshooting information. Wonderful! This book assuredly was not meant to be read front to back. It works like this: start with a problem, and then look up the solution. Bigelow divided the book into sections for various parts of the PC or devices that are connected to it. You look up the device, read about it, heed some general maintenance wisdom, and then peruse the various "symptoms" and cures. Very nice, and just about the best information on troubleshooting that I've seen.

There are two problems. The first (again) is the book's size. Simply put, it's not a pocket-sized book. Osborne should forget that aspect, and publish the book in a size that easily lies flat. Trust me, the information is valuable enough to sell the book; don't get cute with the size. The second is that I'd like to see the symptoms summarized before they're presented. That would make finding specific information easier, and I wouldn't have to thumb through several dozen symptoms/solutions before finding what I want.

On the key subject of disk partitioning, this book fits the bill--but only in troubleshooting partitioning problems. On that subject, Bigelow does a fine job, and even suggests third-party solutions. In fact, the book does contain many third-party solutions, as well as advice on what to do in Windows for troubleshooting.

This book is not for everyone. Most of the introduction is aimed at computer technicians or troubleshooting professionals. But at $19.99 it's a good investment. At the very least, it'll make you the hero on your block, when it comes to troubleshooting PCs. --Dan Gookin

Very Disappointing

I purchased this book because of the several glowing reviews of it on Amazon. Now that I have a copy (which I will be returning shortly) I can only guess that those reviews were written by friends of the author. This book is little more but a long and rambling antidotal collection of PC repair stories roughly organized into general failing areas. No symptom analysis, no error code explanations, no organized flowcharts of logical procedures, no tables of settings and types. Just paragraph after paragraph of "if you notice this, try that". In my mind this should be called something like the "Jeff Foxworthy you might be a redneck PC repair tech manual". However, if you are new to PC repair and have no idea where to start looking for the resolution of a problem, this MIGHT be just the book you need - because you can sit and thumb through it and look like you are doing something useful while you await the arrival of the guy who knows what he's doing. You might even stumble on an antidote that actually applies to the problem you are currently experiencing.

This book is amazing. I repair and troubleshoot PC's professionally, this book is one of my most valuable tools. I always take it with when I am out in the field. I cannot even begin to guess how many times this book has help me find a solution to a problem quicker than I would have found it on my own. I own many pc repair and troubleshooting books. If I were made to give them all up but one; I would not even have to consider which one I would keep. I would keep Bigelow's PC Technician's Troubleshooting Pocket Reference without hesitation. Get the book, you will not regret it. It is a must have tool for your repair kit, absolutely incredible!

I could not believe it when I opened my book-it was in German! I was not going to spend 5 dollars to sent it back and more then likely more postage to get the book in English. This is my first disapointment and it is an expensive one

I chose This rating because this book is incredible... I too have been journeying my way away from fundamental Christianity seeing that is has nothing to offer but fear and control over your life. The writer of this book explains things in a way that are easy to understand, clarifying thing she knows will confuse people new to the concept. I would recommend this book to people and in fact already have.. great read and enlightening! Thank you Barbara Symons :)

A Book That Can Literally Change You Life!!!

I really enjoyed this book! Barbara has written a book that I believe will impact this generation and generations to come.
The book is written in such a way that you can easily recognize a kindred spirit, ...one who has traveled a similar path in their bid to escape Christianity. She has really been transparent in her writing and I believe that there is such a great need for that today.
I would highly recommend this book to any and every person that is transitioning from a fundamental way of thinking in regards to Christianity and sensing the prompting of the Spirit to come up higher in their thinking. I have read this book from beginning to end and feel the need to read it again. I have read numerous books, but never felt as stimulated and enlightened as I have by this one. I believe it can truthfully be listed as a "must read."

I love this book! Barbara Symons writes with intelligence and understanding that comes from above yet with vulnerability and depth that has been forged from her own life experience. Rarely is such involved insight both so honest and profound as this.

Wisdom for recovering Fundamentalist Christians as well seekers from all religions and every walk of life. Symons invites ALL to lose themselves and find themselves in the mystery that is CHRIST.

This book is a gift.
