A Great Story!

Lizzy Mitchell goes from single mom to princess bride, all because she has something that Prince Rico Ceraldi wants. Her nephew which is now her adopted son. He is the young heir to the throne of San Lucenzo.

I saw how this story was going. He must have in some dark place in his mind wanted Lizzy. Why would he want to run away until the royal family had reached a decision. He never said that he wanted the throne so why give him a choice of his bride or the throne?

It was a little puzzling. I don't think she had any body issues anymore because when she went to the spa she saw a whole now person that she could be if she took the time to do it everyday. It was great the Rico wanted her. That should make her feel even better about her self.

I guess I just don't know why people complain about these books. No one told them to buy them, if you don't like harlequin romance then don't read them. I love them because I am taken to a different place every time I read one. It gives me a HEA.

i havent finished this book and dont know if i will. its very tedious , if i have to read one more negative word about the heroine being plain i will upchuck. also if i have to read the child in the book call his uncle tio rico, instead of zio rico i will puke. im italian , the author should get it right, tio is uncle in spanish not italian. dont bother with tis one. spend ur money on something else.

Save yourself they money.....Spoiler Alert

Originally I downloaded this as a sample for my Kindle, only to realize I had previously purchased this at a Friends of the Library Sale.

I will say that this book had some exciting parts in the plot, but there are things that don't add up.

First thing I did not like, the heroine is described as plain, ugly, and very unattractive, she is also basically described as stupid, from the initial meeting Rico finds Lizzy very unattractive. The author goes on to describe her this way through out the entire book, and Prince Rico is very shallow and vain from the beginning almost to the end of the book. Both Rico and Lizzy come from bad negative backgrounds, both were treated as a shadow to their respective siblings that is the one thing they share. It was somewhat exciting when he rescued Ben and Lizzy from the life his father had planned for them, I think that was the most exiting aspect of the plot. As for the rest of the book she has to have an extensive makeover in order for him to find her attractive, and she requires a lot of up keep to be beautiful. They do marry prior to her makeover, however he doesn't fall in love with her until after she is made up. Rico is later arrested and she is forced back to England where she basically accepts herself as the ugly unattractive frumpy aunt to her now bastard nephew. She is described as slowly turning plain without her beauty treatments. Eventually they are reunited after he is striped of his title of Prince and basically vanished from the kingdom.

Someone pointed it out Ben calls his uncle Tio which is the Spanish equivalent of uncle. I also felt the author extended the story of their past too long into the current story. I was very disappointed by the whole story, I would not recommend buying this book.

This is definitely not Harlequin Presents Material.

Surviving

This book is about how ministers have fallen away from their calling and lost the anointing that God placed on them.

The author gives principles that are essential to spirititual survival. It's one thing to start; its another to finish. God wants us to finish our course.

Jesus left us an example to follow in His steps. Keys to longevity and contined blessing in the christian life is to remain in the place of absolute and total dependency upon God. In our weakness, God will make us strong.

About the Author
DAVID LILJA received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Fellow of the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also serves as a member of the graduate faculties in Computer Science and Scientific Computation, and was the founding Director of Graduate Studies for Computer Engineering. He has served on the program committees of numerous conferences and as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers. David is a Senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

Great introductory text!

In a nutshell: nicely written introductory text that covers the basics of performance analysis. It starts with an overview of performance analysis and associated techniques. The subsequent chapters lay the groundwork by giving key concepts and techniques, and then segue into the techniques themselves.
Content and Organization: 278 pages comprised of 11 chapters, a glossary and two appendices of probability distributions and selected statistical tables. Chapter topics are: (1) Introduction, (2) Metrics of Performance (what you should be measuring), (3) Average Performance and Variability (introduces statistical concepts and techniques related to computer performance analysis), (4) Errors in Experimental Measurements (good discussion of accuracy, precision and resolution, and the fundamentals of error quantification with which to validate your findings), (5) Comparing Alternatives, (6) Measurement Tools and Techniques, (7) Benchmark Programs (this chapter merits a book of its own), (8) Linear Regression Models, (9) Design of Experiments, (10) Simulation, and (11) Queuing Analysis.
This book requires some probability and statistics skills, but is a much gentler introduction to the subject than Raj Jain's classic, The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis. There are two things I especially like about this book: (1) it does not immediately launch into quantitative methods. Instead, it introduces them in manageable chunks that will not intimidate a reader whose math skills are rusty. (2) It includes design of experiments, which is a powerful tool that will also prove invaluable in capacity planning - the flip side of performance analysis.
If you've thumbed through other books on computer performance analysis and felt the learning curve was too steep or your math skills were not up-to-par, this book will give you the basics and begin you on a journey towards more advanced techniques. I highly recommend it as a first text on performance analysis and give it 5 stars for making this important discipline accessible to a wider audience.

I bought this book used from Goodwill Industries of South Florida. It arrived pretty fast (more than expected) and the book is actually very new! (there are just some barely noticeable scratches on it).

In an appealing series kickoff, following on the heels of the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker duology (The Innocent Mage, The Awakened Mage), returning character Asher of Restharven must come to grips with the realization that his skills are still needed to keep the land safe, and that his son Rafel's powers might even outstrip his own. When Rafel was a baby, Asher had put a blocking spell on his magical abilities as a precaution-hiding them to keep his son safe-but now Rafel chafes at these restrictions. The story stalls on this disagreement, and Asher's reasoning, besides being is not all that convincing, grows tedious. The conflict deepens though when the weather destabilizes to the point of catastrophic failure, and Asher has spent all his Weather Magic; the only hope now is for someone-namely Rafel-to travel across Barl's Mountains in hopes of finding a magical library. Strong characters with clear viewpoints carry the story forward to a solid, yet surprising ending. The book's main weakness is a lack of exposition; for much of the narrative, Miller assumes readers are familiar with the Asher's story. Still, this new series shows great potential.

Karen Miller was born in Vancouver, Canada, and moved to Australia with her family when she was two. Apart from a three-year stint in the UK after graduating from university with a BA in communications, she's lived in and around Sydney ever since. Karen started writing stories while still in elementary school, where she fell in love with speculative fiction. She's held a variety of interesting jobs but now writes full-time.

The Prodigal Mage

I absolutely loved Kingmaker/Kingbreaker, and I really wanted to love The Prodigal Mage as well. The things I loved about the previous novels don't hold true in this book. I loved Asher's character and really understood where he was coming from in The Innocent Mage and The Awakened Mage. I liked his attitude and ability to set everyone straight. In The Prodigal Mage he comes off as a bitter old man. Asher and his wife argue and fight nonstop in this book. It really bothered me. When they aren't arguing with each other, they are yelling at their kids. Have you ever had to sit and listen to a couple argue with themselves and yell at their kids for long periods of time? If you have, I'll bet you didn't enjoy it. Well that's what you are in for with The Prodigal Mage. Asher doesn't want his children to use bad magic, but he won't explain to them why. So of course, being kids, they do it anyway. When Asher's son Rafel is told not to go into the whirlpools or over the mountains, of course he wants to. It's what kids do. I have to say that most of this book is arguing and debating about the same tired issues. We knew the world wasn't going to be wonderful after the end of The Awakened Mage, and the problems the world faces in The Prodigal Mage are predictable. Of course the two races are going to fight for supremacy and not work together. Of course the people will expect the all powerful Innocent Mage to fix all of their problems in an instant. Of course not everyone trusts Asher. Sigh. The inaction and slowness of Kingmaker/Kingbreaker did not bother me at all because I loved the characters. Even without the characters there was a meaningful plot. I can't say the same about The Prodigal Mage. The characters are all extremely grating, and there is no plot to speak of, just danger. As other reviewers have said, this book is mostly setup, so don't expect any kind of conclusion here. The ending was a bit too predictable to me, and feels like a repeat of the previous novels. I don't think I want to continue with this series, though it pains me to say so since I really do love the world created. The problems the people deal with are real, and they bicker and complain just like real people. On one hand realism is nice, on the other hand if I wanted to hear people complain I would go to a city council meeting, because that's what this book feels like, one big complaint fest.

There was a good 400 pages to build up the story to where it gets interesting. 400 pages of redundancy and set up, going over and over the same things, making this book not at all enjoyable as a stand alone novel. The book starts out with young Rafe speaking of how he was only 6 years old when he first realized he wanted to adventure beyond the borders of Lur, and then the set up to bring you there, which should have been an interesting hundred or so pages, was 400 pages of boredom and the same issues over and over again. If you haven't read the kingmaker duo, the first half of this book will be beyond boring and painful to get through, because its only purpose is to put aside Asher as the hero of the story. Well, if you're picking up this book as a new series without the influence of the previous, we're already set up with Rafe as the main character of this book, so 90% of the story being about why Asher was no longer the hero is pretty much a waste of my time and strained my patience. When it finally gets interesting, and Rafe finally goes on his quest over the mountains, the book ends 50 pages later in a horrible cliffhanger. I'd recommend waiting until book 2 comes out, skimming over the first half of this book, and then reading the rest.

A good follow-up to Kingmaker Kingbreaker

I was a big fan of the original series, Kingmaker Kingbreaker. I think this is a great follow-up to that series after many years. Some other reviews talked about how Asher sounds like a grumpy old man now. I believe that is justified in his character arc - he's been battling ignorance of the kingdom over the past several years, and Prince Gar isn't around to help with the public image. If you remember, Asher was never very good at public relations...it was just that people respected his boss and friend, Gar.

Now I won't pretend that this is better than the original series. It would be some difficult footsteps to follow. I believe the character development of Asher was very well refined as compared to the development of Rafel. I am very curious about his sister, who is allegedly the focus of the next book. I like her character, though she's only a side character in this book.

About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, "Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology" (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic" (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and "Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families" (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for Contemporary Family Perspectives, which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

Beautiful, well written; I couldn't put it down.

I could go on and on about what I loved while reading The Lipstick Gospel, but for the sake of time, I’ll get right down to it. Stephanie writes with such raw honesty, saying things that not many Christian writers would dare to say but I often wish they would. It was written with beautiful imagery, making me feel like I was experience her travels abroad right along with her. And most of all, her story has stuck with me. It serves as a great reminder to me that God continually covers me with His grace, kindness and mercy. Her testimony shows how much of an influence you can have on your friends; how the life you lead and the words you speak can powerfully affect how other’s view God. And her story speaks volumes to the kind of life you can have in Christ. Not a boring, vanilla-type life, but a fun, adventurous and exciting life- way more than you could ever imagine! I definitely recommend this book.

As an avid adventurer, the words on the pages of The Lipstick Gospel spoke to the deepest parts of my sojourning heart. Stephanie has a way of bringing you into her story with such hospitality; it's like she handed me a fresh cappuccino and comfy {stylish} walking shoes of my own, inviting me on the journey with her. We all want stories we can relate to and find respite in, the ability to shout "ME TOO!" as we read. This story, a true and vulnerable depiction of meeting God in the most unlikely of places, will enable you to do just that. Steph shares from the deepest places of longing, brokenness, healing, and redemption, and gently reminds us those are the very places God wants to meet each of us, too. I can't wait to gift this book to some dear friends who are on their own painful and beautiful pilgrimages.

A Story of Finding God and yourself, when you're looking for more.

I feel like Stephanie wrote my life and my college years down on paper better than I ever could. One of my favorite quotes is from the book Their Eyes Were Watching God: "There are two things everybody has to do for themselves: They got to go to God and they got to find out about living for themselves." Stephanie beautifully takes us on her journey of doing both. She describes how diverse God and His love can be and how its not all cookie cutter and breaks the barriers of every-day-traditional-religion. Her words made my heart palpitate for a journey and an adventure as well as reassuring me that my thoughts on Christianity, the way I love God and see Him, the way I live my life--is beautiful and wonderful and God designed. She encouraged me to do those two things: Find God for myself and figure out how to live for myself. This book was a sweet gift from a friend for Christmas. I will cherish it and pass it along to so many other women that I know. Thank you Stephanie for sharing your journey and tasking us all to live the Lipstick Gospel.
