Son of the Stars (Winston Science Fiction Book 8), by Raymond F. Jones

"This person is not even human. It's impossible for me to diagnose the injury or illness of such a structure as his!" With these words and a worried frown, Doc Smithers sums up the case of the strange creature that lay on Ron Barron's bed. For the boy, Clonar, is like nothing earth's medical books have ever cataloged. And the day Ron Barron found him, staggering away from the wrecked metal disk that lay hidden near Longview, is one that put earth's existence in jeopardy!

In SON OF THE STARS, Raymond Jones has written of a forthright friendship between a young castaway from space and his earthly counterpart. How a cold and suspicious military, recognizing Clonar only as an alien from an astonishingly advanced civilization, turns friendship into treachery that threatens earth's existence, makes this an electrifying story with a thought-provoking theme. In scenes uncomfortably vivid, you'll meet soldiers and citizens of a typical American city; people like calculating General Gillispie and frightened Mrs. Barron, whose reactions to an "interplanetary" situation bring the world to the brink of destruction.

Clonar's words, "They're coming to destroy your world!" refer to a planet whose wars and strife might shortly spread to other worlds. Climaxed with a scene of power and drama unmatched in science fiction, SON OF THE STARS is a breath-taking book you won't put down until the very last page - and won't be able to forget until men reach the stars and learn for themselves!

The Kindness of Strangers
By Paul Camp
_Son of the Stars_ (1952) by Raymond F. Jones was one of 36 juveniles published by Winston in the 1950s. It was common practice for Winston to have their authors write factual forewards or afterwards to their novels. Presumably the notion was that these would help to make them "respectable" to parents and librarians, though I suspect that most librarians didn't need that kind of trickery.

Richard Marsten's _Danger: Dinosaurs!_ (1953) had an essay on an imaginary time-slip and history. Chad Oliver's _Mists of Dawn_ (1952) had a detailed introduction to anthropology. Lester del Rey, in _Marooned on Mars_ (1952), discussed the history of the "Martian canals" in astronomy and speculated about the possibility of life on Mars. Jack Vance's _Vandals of the Void_ (1953) predicted that we would enter a future age of piracy. Philip Latham explained how he used some out-of-date astronomy as a basis for creating fictional life in _Missing Men of Saturn_ (1953).

Raymond F. Jones's essay was a tribute to the "back-yard scientists of America" (v):

A ten-year-old boy in Texas begins the search by producing rotten-egg gas with his Christmas chemistry set. At sixteen, he has a well-equipped basement laboratory. A girl in Oregon is astonished at the wonder of her first glimpse through a microscope in junior high. When she enters college, she takes her laboratory with her-- a box containing her own microscope and a few hundred slides. (v)

This topic is one that seems to run through much of Jones's writing. Like Hal Clement, Jones likes to write about scientists-- both professional and amateur-- who engage in the great game of experimentation and observation. At one point, the alien boy Clonar (who knows how to build a transmitter that can communicate over light-years) touches the hero's short-wave radio and says, "It must be-- fun, anyway" (52). Clonar is being polite, but he is also telling the truth. Science _is_ fun. It's not so much the level of technology that your culture may have that counts. It's how well you play the game. Ultimately, it is decided that Earth must learn to make her own way-- both scientifically and morally.

Why morally? Because Clonar is an alien who crash lands on Earth. He is dependent upon the kindness of strangers. He gets it from some people-- the backyard inventer hero, his girlfriend, a crusty country doctor, and an intelligent collie. But often, he does not. The hero's mother is frightened of him. He is arrested by the military. Some of the military (like Colonel Middleton) are unimaginative and paranoid. Others (like General Gillispie) are more intelligent but overly ambitious. The hero's father is tolerant of Clonar, but he has a tendency to believe what those in authority tell him is the truth. Earth people have potential and basic goodness, but they still have a long way to go.

If it is at all possible, get the first edition with the original cover by Alex Schomberg. It depicts a fleet of flying saucers gracefully sailing from a planet with a reddish sandy desert and a blue ocean toward Earth hanging prominently in the sky. But I have sometimes wondered... What is the planet in the foreground? Not the Moon. Not with an ocean. But a planet such as Venus or Mars wouldn't show the Earth as prominently in the sky. Mars wouldn't be likely to have an ocean. Given the scientific knowledge of the day, Venus might have an ocean. But it would also have been cloud-shrouded, hiding any view of outer space. Clonar's world is in another galaxy. So what is the world in the forground? Well, never mind. It's still a spectacular cover.

Changed my life
By A Small Change
This book was one that introduced me to the concept of encounters of the third kind. As in all the Winston series, The hero is a young boy/man who has defining coming of age discoveries which we get to learn as we go through their adventure. This is not the best in the series but affected me for the rest of my life.

Son of the Stars had throwaway dialogue that would stay with me because it became the base belief of how I saw myself in the world. I could do anything I put my mind to, even if I'd never seen it.

Ron is the high school kid that finds a crashed spaceship. In it is an alien teenager named Clonar he eventually befriends. At one point Ron asked Clonar if he’d like to drive his car. Ron briefly explained the controls of the car. In a few moments Clonar's skills seemed equal to Ron's.

“Is there anything you can't learn in 10 seconds flat?” said Ron.

“We are trained to do things this way.”

“How can you train to do something you don't even know you're going to be called upon to do?"

Clonar smiled. “It's like providing a workshop with every tool that may ever be needed instead of waiting until a given job comes along and then assembling the tools one by one. That is about the best analogy I can give.”

From then on, I would look at anything as fixable or learnable so built and did things i had never even attempted before.

I enjoyed every page of this book and made sure that ...
By Allan Ecker
Son of the Stars by Raymond F Jones is a science fiction novel written in the 1950’s

The story starts with Ron Barron, a backyard scientist and amateur radio ham looking for a meteorite that has fallen to earth in the mountains near his home. While he is looking for the meteorite with his dog he finds a flying saucer that crashed along with a young man of his age who is injured and requires medical help. With the help of his girlfriend Ann, Ron brings the injured person to his home and sends for the family doctor. The three of them learn the spaceman’s name is Clonar. Ron tells his family about Clonar, and Mrs. Barron becomes frightened and tells Ron to get rid of him. Ron’s father is asked to contact the military to see what can be done to help Clonar get back home.

Here the story takes the typical story line that anything that cannot be understood must be dangerous and must be destroyed or taken by the military. The authorities throw all kinds of roadblocks up to stop Clonar from contacting his people to get home, and try to force him to reveal the secretes of his flying saucer. Only after Ron makes a deal with the general in charge of the case, General Gillespie and Clonar, is Clonar allowed to contact his people. Clonar learns that the fleet of his ships is on the way to destroy the Earth because of being shot down.

Clonar is able to change the mind of the Fleet Commander to stop the destruction of the Earth. The fleet than sends a ship to Earth to pick up Clonar. When Clonar says goodbye to Ron, he tells him that there can be no communication between each other.
SON of the STARS is a breath-taking fast action story you won't want to put down until the very last page, and doesn’t end here, but continues in the sequel Planet of Light. I enjoyed every page of this book and made sure that I read the sequel to complete the story.

A Woman's Words: Emer and Female Speech in the Ulster Cycle, by Joanne Findon

A Woman's Words is the first in-depth analysis of Middle Irish literature from a feminist standpoint, and the first formal critical discussion of the representation of female speech in medieval Irish literature. Joanne Findon analyses the representation of Emer, the wife of the great Irish hero Cu Chulainn, in four linked medieval Irish tales, and discusses Emer's ability to use powerful, effective words to change her fictional world and the audience's reading of that fictional world.

A Woman's Words considers Emer as a literary figure rather than a mythic archetype or a reflection of a pre-Christian Celtic goddess. Emer and the narratives she inhabits are discussed as literary constructs, and are considered within the historical and legal milieu in which these tales were told, recorded, and read. Findon places Emer within the wider context of medieval literature in general as an unusual and compelling example of a heroic secular woman, married and fully integrated into her aristocratic society and yet capable of speaking out against its abuses. Her freedom to speak and be heard is remarkable in the light of prevalent later medieval impulses to silence women.

By employing speech act theory to analyse Emer's discourse, and by viewing and interpreting the texts through the lens of current feminist criticism, Joanne Findon seeks to bring Middle Irish literature into the arena of current debates, particularly among feminist medievalists, and to offer a new approach to reading female characters in medieval Irish literature.

Review

'A Woman's Words: Emer and Female Speech in the Ulster Cycle is a readable and provocative piece of work. It presents an underappreciated body of literature to a general audience in a timely and accessible manner and provides an admirably contextualized reading not only of the role of Emer, but of the shifting position of Irish women in the period immediately before the Norman Conquest.'

The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Jason De Leon

In his gripping and provocative debut, anthropologist Jason De Len sheds light on one of the most pressing political issues of our time—the human consequences of US immigration policy. The Land of Open Graves reveals the suffering and deaths that occur daily in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona as thousands of undocumented migrants attempt to cross the border from Mexico into the United States.

Drawing on the four major fields of anthropology, De Len uses an innovative combination of ethnography, archaeology, linguistics, and forensic science to produce a scathing critique of “Prevention through Deterrence,” the federal border enforcement policy that encourages migrants to cross in areas characterized by extreme environmental conditions and high risk of death. For two decades, this policy has failed to deter border crossers while successfully turning the rugged terrain of southern Arizona into a killing field.

In harrowing detail, De Len chronicles the journeys of people who have made dozens of attempts to cross the border and uncovers the stories of the objects and bodies left behind in the desert.

The Land of Open Graves will spark debate and controversy.

Review
"The Land of Open Gravesis hard to put down. Its violent and vivid content draws you into a reality that we should all know about, and the author's interpretation provides a political and theoretical perspective that challenges conventional beliefs about undocumented migration." (TLS 2016-01-22)

"A powerful book . . . The Land of Open Graves is very appropriately published in the California Series in Public Anthropology and represents just what public or engaged anthropology can and should be. . . . This is a book that all parties should read." (Anthropology Review Database 2016-02-20)

From the Inside Flap
"De Len confronts us with a vivid indictment of the killing fields on the US-Mexico border and reveals the brutality of global inequality in all its goriness and intimate suffering. A self-described refugee from archaeology, De Len is revitalizing the field of anthropology by blowing apart the traditional subdisciplinary boundaries. With no holds barred, he offers new paths for theory, methods, and public anthropology." —Philippe Bourgois, author of Righteous Dopefiend and In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio

"Jason De Len has written a remarkable book. I know of no other ethnography of life and death on the borderlands that is more moving, theoretically ambitious, or powerful than this eagerly awaited work." —Mara Elena Garca, author of Making Indigenous Citizens: Identities, Education, and Multicultural Development in Peru

"This book sears itself into your memory. You literally can’t put it down." —Stanley Brandes, Robert H. Lowie Professor of Anthropology, UC Berkeley

"An impressive piece of scholarship, The Land of Open Graves is a brilliant and important book that humanizes the realities of life and death on the migrant trail in southern Arizona."—Randall H. McGuire, author of Archaeology as Political Action

"Jason De Len has written that rare and precious book—a masterful deployment of tools from across the broad spectrum of anthropology." —Danny Hoffman, author of The War Machines: Young Men and Violence in Sierra Leone and Liberia

"The Land of Open Graves is a politically, theoretically, and morally important book that mobilizes the four fields of anthropology to demonstrate beyond a doubthow current US border defense policy results in deliberate death.Beautifully written and engaging, it is a must-read for the general public and students across the social sciences." —Lynn Stephen, author of Transborder Lives: Indigenous Oaxacans in Mexico, California, andOregon and We Are the Face of Oaxaca: Testimony and Social Movements

"The Land of Open Gravesis an invaluable book, one full of rich ethnographic accounts of migrants, sharp analysis, and beautiful photographs by Michael Wells (as well as some by the migrants De Len encounters). It is a strong indictment of the violence migrants face, particularly of a structural sort, and it calls us to “better understand how our worlds are intertwined and the ethical responsibility we have to one another as human beings." It deserves a broad audience."—NACLA Report on the Americas

I think this book gives great insight on what migrants have to go through when crossing them border to get to America. Even though I do not agree with what the author said about some things, this book was written very well and drew me in from the moment I started reading this book. The Copernican Question: Prognostication, Skepticism, and Celestial Order, by Robert S. Westman

In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus publicly defended his hypothesis that the earth is a planet and the sun a body resting near the center of a finite universe. But why did Copernicus make this bold proposal? And why did it matter? The Copernican Question reframes this pivotal moment in the history of science, centering the story on a conflict over the credibility of astrology that erupted in Italy just as Copernicus arrived in 1496. Copernicus engendered enormous resistance when he sought to protect astrology by reconstituting its astronomical foundations. Robert S. Westman shows that efforts to answer the astrological skeptics became a crucial unifying theme of the early modern scientific movement. His interpretation of this "long sixteenth century," from the 1490s to the 1610s, offers a new framework for understanding the great transformations in natural philosophy in the century that followed.

“The Copernican Question is a truly astonishing work. Westman writes with the authority of someone who has really done his homework; he tells a fascinating story and tells it exceedingly well." —Ernan McMullin, editor of The Church and Galileo

“Robert Westman’s engrossing book—the fruit of many years’ research—offers the best answer given so far to the question of Copernicus. The Polish astronomer was an enigma to his contemporaries and to many who later struggled to understand his ideas. Westman shows that astrological prediction provides the missing key to his work and to its interpretation by astronomers in the subsequent decades. He sets the Copernican tradition against a backdrop of tumultuous religious conflict, apocalyptic prophecies, and the explosive growth of printed publications. This book is a magnificent scholarly achievement. Everyone who is seriously interested in the science and culture of early-modern Europe will want to read it.” —Jan Golinski, author of British Weather and the Climate of Enlightenment

"Robert Westman's The Copernican Question is a magnificent achievement. It is a comprehensive, nuanced, and fascinating reinterpretation of the Copernican century and the transformation of astronomy. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants a new understanding of the history of the heliocentric hypothesis and the complex problems facing Copernicus and his contemporaries and followers." —Carolyn Merchant, author of The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology, and the Scientific Revolution

“The Copernican Question is a richly detailed, extensively researched, and engagingly written book that radically recontextualizes major figures in the “science of the stars” from Copernicus to Galileo, revealing new connections and motivations for their work and ideas. It will be required reading for historians and philosophers of science and for anyone interested in how and why we came to know what we do about the heavens.” —Lawrence M. Principe, author of The Scientific Revolution: A Very Short Introduction

Resounding Endorsement, with Minor Reservations
By Buck Field
After much delay in getting my hands on this book in Patagonia, the preface of Westman's book seduced me instantly. In the opening sentence of the preface he asks: "Under what conditions do people change or give up beliefs to which they are most deeply committed?" This is a fascinating question, although the most unsatisfying and prosaic answer happens to be the most accurate: when that person dies. Thomas Kuhn (The Structure of Scientific Revolutions) was well aware of this from his very limited observations, but Westman is driving at illuminating the process of transformation rather than at mere cessation.

What strikes me as odd, is the author's focus on "origins", and his division of the book's material into two equal perspectives. First is a focus on "what was THE orginal question Copernicus was trying to answer" [my emphasis] and follow-up issues and unknowns relating to what question. The second, but not necessarily of lesser importance is "the KINDs of answers offered by Copernicus and those who followed him."

As described, attention may be drawn to use of "the question", which assumes there is a single, most important consideration which is unlike typical cognition. When we are thinking about anything non-trivial, we normally have reinforcing and conflicting networks of complex associations. C's development of the heliocentic model, and the decisions about communicating it were undoubtedly of this level of complexity.

I appreciate the author's diligence and determination to violate the well-meaning advice of friends, and pursue writing this book. As it contains fascinating historical information, e.g.: the association of C with Dominico Novara, this huge volume details the factors which seem perhaps most easily structured within the context illustrated in Creating Scientific Concepts (Bradford Books).

Excellent Book
By Mark Perlsweig
The author, his real name is Warren Kenton, seems to come from the practical Kabbalah side of this tradition. However, the book is well written and internally coherent and I feel that he puts forth his point of view well in both a theoretical manner and as an experientially based guide. His interpretation of the tree of life and its relationship to the four worlds and the ability of humans to move their focus of attention up and down is an outstanding original contribution. Beats the heck out of the biopsychosocial model used in medicine and is generalizable to many personality types found in the world. It really provides an elegant and cohesive understanding of the states of consciousness that are not in the standard ego mode. This model can be used as a wonderful teaching aid to those who are aware of their spiritual self but are too bogged down in society or bad previous religious experiences to understand non-ego states of being.

The experiential meditation examples are very welcome and helpful, but are not really as well linked into a fabric of understanding. Its kind of like getting a calculus book with a great problem example solution from chapter 15. It is good but where is the context?

Additionaly missing from this author is the sense of historicity, holiness, dangerousness and submission to God's will that must be part and parcel of this work. For this aspect, I would read Aryeh Kaplan's Meditation and Kabbalah.

5+ rarity
By Neal J. Pollock
Halevi has written quite a few introductory level books on Kabbalah which are highly recommended for their conciseness and clarity. This is NOT one of them. Of the dozen of his books I've read, I'd rate this my favorite. Probably because it's one of the most advanced. The other advanced (and more practical in the generic sense) is "School of Kabbalah"). Halevi is a practicing Kabbalist, as opposed to Kabbalistic historians such as Gershom Scholem. Each has his/her place. I'd recommend a sound grounding in Kabbalah before tackling this book. Read some Scholem and some of Halevi's other works first. This is a fine book which includes exercises and visualizations appropriate to the aspiring Kabbalist. It is somewhat reminiscent of "The Shining Paths" by Ashcroft-Nowicki but, perhaps a bit more down to earth. Advanced mystics know that one has to keep one's feet on the ground while one's head is in the clouds. Halevi has his sights set. As he stated in "Introduction to the Cabala" (or the "Tree of Life"), Samuel Weiser, York Beach, ME 1972/1991 p.202, "The rabbis have said that the reason for Existence is that it acts as a vast mirror of contemplation by which God may behold God...the Holy One beholds the Holy One through our experience." Tread the Path, but tread it carefully.

A very inspiring book
By Martin A. Schell
The first book of Halevi's that I read was *School of the Soul: Its Path and Pitfalls*, which he published several years after this book. *School of the Soul* describes the development of spiritual groups, while *The Work of the Kabbalist* focuses more on the individual.
People who have heard of (or experienced) the Kabbalah as a strictly Jewish path full of precise rules will find this book refreshing (or perhaps shocking). Although Halevi provides several detailed diagrams based on the traditional Etz Chaim (tree of life), he also devotes a large portion of the text to exercises that seem primarily imaginative.
A key theme in Halevi's books is the awareness that Kabbalah is a living tradition which must adapt to changing circumstances. This flexibility dovetails with his inclusive, welcoming attitude to readers who belong to traditions other than Judaism.
From the outset, the reader will recognize that this book is rooted in many years of personal experience as both student and teacher. Halevi's wisdom and compassion shine through in every chapter, but each reader will naturally find "good parts" that resonate with his or her individual perspective.
I take the liberty of quoting a paragraph from his chapter on Integrity:
"The practice of integrity is vital to a spiritual tradition, for it not only safeguards the individual, but the Work. Over the last few centuries Kabbalistic ideas have been stolen and adulterated by those who only sought magical powers, with the result that an image of dangerous hotchpotch has overlaid the real purpose of Kabbalah. Because of this, the tradition has fallen into disrepute amongst Jews who see it as a degenerate form of occultism. Thus, by the last century the reputation of Kabbalah had fallen from high respect during its most original period in Medieval times to a superstitious repetition of magical formulae. This happened because the Work was not protected in the right way. It is not secrecy that guards the tradition, but correct conduct, and if this is not present, then people do not find the door to the inner path which is their birthright. The lack of real spirituality today amongst clergy has made many Jews and Christians turn to the Eastern religions for their esoteric instruction. This is sad because they have within their own Western traditions all the higher knowledge and methods they need for the development of the Occidental psyche and spirituality."

Not Child's Play: An Anthology on Brother-Sister Incest, by Risa Shaw

Not Child’s Play is the first collection ever dedicated to the important topic of women survivors of incest perpetrated by their brothers. This unprecedented book is a collection of short stories, poetry, prose and art (black and white and color) by 35 women from the United States, Canada and England, presented in an extraordinarily courageous way.

This anthology is immensely readable, uplifting and empowering. This book not only provides a life line for survivors, but is also essential reading for counselors and therapists, the families of the survivors, those in women studies, sociology and psychology, and those who work with teens.

A painful but necessary look at a difficult topic. [Moving] from shame to action is made easier with this collection. -- WATERwheel, Summer 2001

One of the most interesting and touching parts...are the photos of the "Incest Survivor Action Figures." -- The Washington Blade, May 25, 2001

This is a powerful book, which, despite its painful subject, is beautifully written and highly inspirational. -- Sexual Assault Report, March/April 2002

adresses a key gap in existing literature
By A. Przygoda
In recent years, more and more information has been made available on the epidemic of childhood sexual abuse. However, despite the proliferation in professional and self-help literature on the topic, there are still important gaps, and Shaw's book represents an empowering attempt at addressing one of those gaps. There is little information out there on sibling abuse, even though studies have shown that it is likely even more common than adult-child abuse. Shaw's anthology gives voice to survivors of brother-sister incest. The writings and visual art of survivors underline the catastrophic effects this particular kind of childhood sexual abuse has on the victims, yet, they also show the immense amount of resilience and strength in the women who contributed to the book.

The stories can be triggering to read, but at the same time they finally provide recognition of a type of abuse that so often goes unnoticed. This is an immensely important and empowering book.

"Speaking up and speaking out changes everything."
By Rebecca Young
This line in Risa Shaw's complex and beautifully-composed anthology on brother-sister sexual abuse perfectly captures the power of this little gem of a book.
Shaw has collected the voices and art of 35 survivors, and she let's them speak up and out in complex and non-homogenized ways. The editing for this volume is beautiful, as the brief pieces are clear but not in any way standardized in content or form. Here you will meet women who explode with unequivocal rage, stories of girls who told and girls who kept quiet, families who stopped it and (many more) families who didn't, women who have patiently and lovingly cultivated honest adult relationships with their former abusers, women whose demands for truth have cost them their families, and women whose deeply complicated and ambivalent memories make room simultaneously for shame, hurt, fear, and pleasure.
I do not *agree* with every analysis that's offered in this book, but why should I? There is such a glorious chorus of smart voices here that invites a great new level of discussion to commence on this severely under-discussed topic. For example, Margaret Randall writes "Brother-sister incest is not about sex. It is not about pleasure. It is about power, pure and simple" (foreword, p. 2). I think that's too simple - I read many of the pieces in the book as demonstrating how brother-sister sexual abuse is so damaging precisely because it IS about sex and pleasure at the same time that it is about power. Deep, systematic power imbalances distort both girls' and boys' experiences of pleasure and sexual development. I welcome the opportunity to have this discussion, finally! Brava to Risa Shaw and the many contributors. And one additional note: the book is worth it for the Action Girl Figures alone. Simply brilliant!

Oustanding, ground-breaking work :)
By A Customer
This anthology is an amazing work. After decades of silence about the issue of brother-sister incest, we finally have a book that is as inspiring as it is informative. The anthology includes writing and artwork drawn from 35 women. This is not a book about victims. It is a book about survivors-- about strong women who learned to say no, who learned to speak out against this often-ignored form of violence in hopes that future generations of children could be protected.
I found the book an exhilerating roller-coaster ride of emotions, ranging from raw, unbridled anger, to eventual healing and a sense of wholeness. This is a book written for everyone. It includes powerful short stories, poetry, and visual artwork. It will make you angry, it will make you sad, and it will leave you in awe at the resilence of the human spirit. But the one thing it won't do is leave you untouched.
