About the Author
Joan Saslow is the author of a number of textbook series for adults and young adults, including "Ready to Go," "Workplace Plus," and "Literacy Plus," She was also the Series Director of "True Colors: An EFL Course for Real Communication," and of "True Voices," an EFL video course. Ms. Saslow's special interest is in distinguishing the needs of the EFL and ESL learner and creating materials appropriate for each. Ms. Saslow has taught in Chile and the United States in a variety of programs, including binational centers, academic programs, intensive language programs, and workplace programs. Ms. Saslow has been an editor, a teacher-trainer, a language learner, and a frequent speaker at gatherings of English teachers throughout the world. Allen Ascher, formerly Director of the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, author, and publisher. He has taught in language and teacher-training programs in both China and the United States. Mr. Ascher has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. Mr. Ascher is author of "Think About Editing: A Grammar Editing Guide for ESL Writers," As a publisher, he played a key role in the creation of some of the most widely used materials for adults. Best American English Video Series!

Born and raised in a country where we do not interact with native English speaker much, I took the Top Notch English complete course. I got the DVDs for myself and watched over and over and over! I recently moved to the US for school. My American friends jokingly and successfully pass me off for an American from California :) I give a lot credit to Top Notch for my English speaking skills. It's the best (and finely entertaining) series of learning English. I am getting this package right now for a Turkish friend who asked me to get him "the best" video series for learning English.

I think it's more than worth your investment.

About the Author

Paul H. Blaney, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Emory & Henry College in southwest Virginia. Dr. Blaney received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Minnesota. He held faculty positions, involving leadership in the graduate programs in clinical psychology, at the University of Texas at Austin and at the University of Miami. He has served as consulting editor of Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Psychological Assessment.

Robert F. Krueger, PhD, is Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Hathaway Distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University Minnesota, Twin Cities. Dr. Krueger obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and completed his clinical internship at Brown University. He has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and the Journal of Personality, and is currently Editor of the Journal of Personality. Disorders.

Theodore Millon, PhD, DSc, was the Dean and Scientific Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology. Previously, he served as Visiting Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and as Professor of Psychology at the University of Miami. Dr. Millon was an international authority on personality disorders.

A Good Tool -- Book AND Cassette

I've used this series in Egyptian and other dialects to brush up before visiting various places. It is excellent to get conversational/survival skills up to speed in a short time. It is also good to get an ear for certain dialects and see their quirks.
I already had experience with Arabic before using this. Regardless, I would warn that it is ESSENTIAL that you acquire BOTH the book and the cassette. I can't see either as useful separately. The marketing for this, especially on the web, is fairly vague since they are available as a set and as casette and book separately.
There is no reason why this wouldn't be a good gateway for a person to learn aural arabic skills. The book is done entirely in transliterated latin text -- no Arabic script. And it works fairly well, especially if all you want to do is get around in Egyptian.
I recommend this set. If you have a limited budget, this set and a Lonely Plant or Rough Guide Egyptian phase book would get you pretty far. ...

Simple and easy

I have read reviews of people saying that they only bought the book or a tape. Now, I bought both at the same time and have been using them together. I have found the methods used very helpful, and the only drawback to the set is that a large part of the vocabulary is not on tape, so after you get used to the sounds that letters make you will have to guess what the words not said on tape sound like, although because the transliterations are fairly easy, it is not a difficult task. Overall, a great way to learn the language.

Good only if you're interested in advanced conjugation

I am travelling to Egypt and wanted to learn some Arabic. I bought this product because "colloquial" sounded good. But I find it completely useless. The words on the tape are read much too quickly, and I find myself flipping frantically through the book trying to find the lessons that are being read. It focuses on very advanced grammar and a lot of weird idioms. There is virtually nothing useful to me on it.

Loved the continuing story of Audrey! Great sequel.

Ahhh, I thought the cover of Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft was beautiful. I think I love this one even more ~ I love the color blue!

Once again, Jody has written a very enchanting story which follows Audrey as she learns about the witching world. And what better time to read about black magic and witchcraft then Halloween time? I love reading Audrey's stories this time of year, they just get me in the mood for spookiness.

This time Audrey, her sister Meg, and their cousin Sadie are whisked away to the Mad River compound to try to help their mom battle evil. More and more responsibility is put on Audrey, which she just loves by the way, as her powers become stronger and more consistent.

Poor Meg has a hard time fitting in, here in this world where she is not the 'popular' sister, where she is the odd one out. It was interesting seeing the role reversal between these two characters as they are either in, or out, of their comfort zone.

There was plenty of danger and excitement to keep me wanting to flip the pages, or in this particular case, swiping my Kindle screen. But along with the witchy things happening, there were enough personal things going on in the story to make the characters seem real to me.

And oooooo the Epilogue! What a way to end book #2! I know we are in for a treat in book #3. I can't wait!!

Great sequel, and great on its own

Audrey may have recently learned she’s a witch, but she’s also a very serious, sensible, scientific student, with an annoying little sister, and a note-book where she records all the things she needs to know, like “Sadie’s Super Secret-Binding Spell,” and other magical things. Little sister Meg doesn’t even know her mom and Audrey are magical, since her sole concerns are boyfriends and her band. But she’s going to find out.

Audrey’s Guide to Black Magic may be second in a series, but it stands alone perfectly, and starts by leaping straight into the magic of its tale. With a convincing first-person teen voice, believable relationships, and magical descriptions, the author evokes a Land of “whimsical charm, a deep balance between human inventiveness and nature,” and terrifying danger. It’s a wonderful shelter where magical power is treated as a natural resource, carefully reserved. But it’s under threat from terrors most of the witches don’t even believe in.

Audrey’s been told she has great powers, but learning to use them is hard and she can’t help feeling she doesn’t belong. There are lines not to be crossed, rules to be followed, and prohibitions against black magic and blood. But where does family end and enemy begin? Which loyalties will prove stronger? And is fate trying to help or hinder her?

Darkly scary and gorgeously lyrical in turns, Audrey’s Guide is a fast fun tale filled with excitement, thought-provoking moments, mysterious threats and hopes. Romantic elements are perfectly tied to the tale, never intrusive, always important to the plot, and nicely muted, making this a great teen read. And list-making Audrey, with her note-book by her side, is a wonderful heroine for our times.

Audrey's Guide to Black Magic

I enjoyed Audrey's Guide to Black Magic so much more than the first book! It took all of the good things and made them great! Audrey has come to terms with the fact that she and her mother are witches, but now it's time to come clean to her little sister. Meg, as a mundane, only gets to know this secret because their grandmother has invited them to "the Land" for Christmas break. She takes the news well, but it does put some strain on her relationship with Audrey. What's suppose to be a happy family reunion and holiday celebration takes a dark turn as evil infiltrates the compound and Audrey must once again step up and stop it.

I love love loved the Land! I had first pictured it as very green, speckled with flowers, and quaint cottages scattered about, but it is so much more than that! Yes, nature is the focal point, and there are cottages, but there's also huts, caves, and tree houses! It was very easy to picture and fun to read about. Audrey's Guide to Black Magic also really expands on magic, both light and dark. Just like the first book, there's spells and recipes included, along with Audrey's own random lists of things. I adore these extras. I was really interested in the black magic, even as Audrey was hesitant to try it, even for the greater good. There's some creepy stuff going on! In addition to the amazing location and the magic lessons, we also learn more Audrey's strange connection to Julian. I won't spoil it though!

As for the plot, it moves along quite fast, but never felt jumbled. We finally get to meet Audrey and Meg's mother in Audrey's Guide to Black Magic, since her group of warrior witches and sorcerers return to the compound for awhile. She also has a mission for Audrey: find Cormack's spy. I did figure out the traitor almost immediately. It just took one standout sentence, but I though it was clever rather than just obvious. However, it doesn't play out how I imagined at all. The ending is a bit shocking, and a little sad, but it does have me eager for the next book!
