Daimler-Benz in the Third Reich, by Neil Gregor

This powerful book examines the Daimler-Benz company-one of Germany's most important armament and automobile manufacturers-from its formation in 1926 to the end of World War II and reveals for the first time its close association with the Third Reich. It is a timely contribution to the history of collaboration between German business and the Nazis.

Daimler-Benz conspired with the Nazis during the war.
By A Customer
The basic premise of this book is that Daimler-Benz, the maker of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, placed profit before principle and committed criminal acts during World War II. The evidence is displayed as if presented by a prosecutor in court. There is little room for doubt or deception. The book is not always easy to read and the story line is at times hard to follow. There are too many abbreviations that require frequent clarification. Maps should have been included that would have assisted the reader in following the location of the many Daimler-Benz plants. The "story" is important and represents an original contribution, however, the book could have been more "user friendly".

A view in to the past... understanding what has happened.
By Jose Ernesto Passos
I rate this book specially for its contents, describing what happened during a difficult period of German History with an objective view.

The study of Daimler Benz history is a good case to see how things happened, what economic conditions were present, what management concepts were used at the time and a description of the development of production technology that made possible the German Industrial power to develop during the Third Reich.

It may also help understand the behavior of the managers in charge of the company, in relation to the human values involved.
This topic is difficult to handle with objectivity. I recommend reading Daniel Faber's book on Alfred Sloan of General Motors to have a feeling of how american top management behaved and thought during the 30's and the second world war(book title: Sloan Rules). It is important to understand how management in America thought their mission, their rights and what they thought was normal behavior to make a paralel to what their contemporaries in Germany were doing.

I think this book is must reading for anyone that is interested in the history of business.

Economic History of Daimler AG under a Corrup Regime
By Robert E. Murena Jr.
I'll start this book off noting that this book is really an economic history of the Daimler-Benz production from the late twenties through the end of WWII. It does not focus on racing, the vehicles themselves terribly much. If this is what you are looking for though It is a fantastic book that is very intelligently written. I would qualify that by saying that even as someone very well steeped in WWII German history and an intimate knowledge of Daimler Benz product and history there is a need to really know the back story. If this book was your among your first exploring the German economy during WWII, you'd probably do better starting with some general history.

The meat of the book really focuses on the production of engines and vehicles as DB takes over factories through the Reich with explicit help from Hitler's government and what the output was as the Reich expanded and inevitably collapsed. One of the more interesting elements of the book happens later on as the Allied bombing campaign continually destroys the factories and how DB responds by dispersing their production lines to mines and bunkers thus saving much of their equipment. Another interesting aspect of the book is how DB continued to develop a plan for a post war return to passenger vehicle development.

There's naturally some very horrible truths that are described in this book regarding forced labor and this is difficult reading to be sure. That said, this is a great case study of how a large manufacturer in the Third Reich had to politic their way to get government contracts and deal with a criminal leadership. I would recommend this book to anyone deeply interested in the economics of war as well as anyone who is a fan of Mercedes-Benz that wants to know the full history of the brand given that most histories do not focus on this time period.

Perfidious Proverbs and Other Poems: A Satirical Look At The Bible (Gateway Bookshelf), by Philip Appleman

This collection of satirical poems homes in on the inconsistencies and downright perversities of what passes in our culture as "Holy Writ." Turning to satire, with its long and distinguished record of exposing folly and bringing enlightenment through humor, the author leaves no doubt that primitive religion posing as eternal truth is just the sort of folly that satire is meant to correct.

He lets his poetic imagination roam widely, as he takes on the roles of Eve, Noah, Sarah, Jonah, David, Mary, Jesus, Judas, and even the biblical Jehovah Himself, ("I never apologize, never explain."). We also hear from priests, televangelists, and faith healers, as well as some sensible contemporaries, commenting on what it means to live a life of reason.

At the conclusion to the introduction, the author says: "Intelligent and well-meaning people have argued for centuries against the fatal attraction of foolishness, but their efforts have been largely unproductive, partly because many people seem impervious to rational discussion. So perhaps satire is our most effective way of lighting candles in the darkness and communicating effectively to those who are immune to reason. That is, at any rate, the hope, and the rationale, of this book."

In this age of suicide bombers and resurgent fundamentalism, we need these lighted candles like never before.

This book is the best book on archery I have ever read! I first found this book in a local library. I'm trying to find a copy of this book (Preferably Brand New), unfortunately it is out of print. Fred Bear, as many know, is the best bowyer who has lived. It is veerrryyyy long and explains, step-by-step, all techniques from beginer to advanced. If I could only have one archery book. This is it!

The Girl Next Door: A Novel, by Ruth Rendell

INCLUDES AN EXCERPT OF RENDELL’S FINAL NOVEL, DARK CORNERS

From crime legend Ruth Rendell, a psychologically intriguing novel about an old murder that sends shockwaves across a group of astonishingly carnal and appetiteful elderly friends: “Refined, probing, and intelligent…never less than a pleasure” (USA TODAY).

In the waning months of the second World War, a group of children discover a tunnel in their neighborhood outside London. For that summer of 1944, the subterranean space becomes their “secret garden,” where the friends play games, tell their fortunes, and perform for each other.

Six decades later, construction workers make a grisly discovery beneath a house on the same land: a tin box containing two skeletal hands, one male and one female. As the hands make national news, the friends come together once again, to recall their long ago days for a detective. Then the police investigation sputters, and the threads holding their friendship together begin to unravel. Is the truth buried amid the tangled relationships of these aging men and women and their memories? Will it emerge before it’s too late?

Stephen King says, “no one surpasses Ruth Rendell when it comes to stories of obsession, instability, and malignant coincidence.” In The Girl Next Door—“yet another gem” (The Washington Post)—Rendell brilliantly shows that the choices people make, and the emotions behind them, remain as potent in late life as they were in youth. “Rendell’s wit, always mordant, has never been sharper than when she skewers patronizing assumptions about the elderly” (Chicago Tribune).

Review
“Using her customary spare yet decorous style and measured pace, Rendell, now in her 80s, beautifully and carefully individualizes each member of her ensemble cast, at the same time creating not a grim reminder of mortality but a picture of moribund lives renewed. A special book by a special writer.” (Booklist (starred review))

“[Rendell] creates another riveting story with her sharp characterizations and keen sense of irony that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Fans of psychological suspense, along with Rendell’s loyal following, will love this complex story.” (Library Journal (starred review))

"Ruth Rendell's fiction clusters at such a high level that the best judgment I can render about The Girl Next Door is this: It's a good Rendell, and that makes it very good indeed." (Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post)

“Only recently has it been common for novelists to work into their late 70s and beyond — not merely producing new work but writing at a very high level. A case in point is Ruth Rendell, whose new novel, The Girl Next Door, just appeared. Rendell is 84…Like her contemporary P.D. James, she is one of the finest writers of her time… her wit, always mordant, has never been sharper than when she skewers patronizing assumptions about the ‘elderly.’”

 (John Wilson, Chicago Tribune)

“[Rendell] is one of the most literate living writers of fiction…Her witty style and her endless trove of subtle references to fellow writers (living and dead) are matched by a timeliness that always takes on contemporary social issues along with the invented mystery that propels her plot into action. Part of the miracle is that with more than 60 books to her credit over a half-century career, Ms. Rendell never descends into mere formula. The Girl Next Door is no exception.” (Robert Croan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“[Rendell] has always been at her heart-stopping best when she pushes the reader out of the comfort zone with her stand-alone psychological thrillers…The Girl Next Door is vintage Rendell and a perfect celebration of her half-century…This novel reminded me of the singularity of Ruth Rendell’s talent, her effortless mastery of language and her uncanny genius for mapping a criminal mind.” (Kate Saunders, The Times (U.K.))

“This book is extraordinarily courageous, a demonstration that fiction can take us where reportage dares not go.” (The Independent (U.K.))

“A must read… not your typical crime story, but it is a typical Rendell book — cunningly observed, elegantly written.” (Ed Siegel, WBUR)

The Girl Next Door
By Damaskcat
The reader knows who has committed the murder from the start of this well written crime novel so it isn't a traditional 'who done it' and there is very little input from the police investigating the crime at a later date. The book primarily concerns a group of friends who were children at the time of the murder - near the end of World War II - and how the discovery of two severed hands in a biscuit tin sixty years later affects them.

It is fairly obvious who one of the hands belongs to but the reader must wait until almost the end of the book to find out who is the other victim. I thought the characters were well developed and the author paints a vivid picture of their lives as adults. I thought it was interesting how the dynamics between the group changed and developed as the discovery of the hands leads to them talking about what happened that Summer when the murders probably took place.

If you're looking for a conventional crime novel then this may not be for you but if you're looking for an excellent novel about how people change - and don't change - during their lifetime then this may be of interest to you. Whether or not you enjoy crime novels this is worth reading for its development of character and the way small events can have huge repercussions at the time as well as many years later. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from NetGalley.

The Girl Next Door
By S Riaz
This novel, more literary than traditional crime fiction, veers between the present and the past. During the Second World War a group of children in Loughton, Essex, played together in some underground tunnels they found and renamed ‘the qanats.’ Nobody really remembers why, but time has passed and the group of children have grown up, grown old and, mostly, dispersed. However, the discovery of a pair of severed hands, buried in a biscuit tin so long ago, now brings many of those who played there so long ago back together again. Daphne Jones, three times married and still glamorous, Michael Winwood, whose father chased them from the tunnels and Lewis Newman, both now widowed, childhood sweethearts Alan Norris and Rosemary Wharton and the Batchelors – of whom George, Stanley and Norman are still alive.

The police are asked to investigate the crime – of which the reader is already aware of both victims and murderer . However, this book is more about the impact of the discovery and of unearthing old memories on those involved. In many ways this is a poignant and touching read – of both how age limits and frees us. It reunites old lovers, wreaks huge changes and forces people to confront their loss and childhood traumas. Ruth Rendell manages to make all the characters sympathetic, so you really care about what happens to them. Despite the length of time between the crime and the investigation, making even the police involved cynical about finding a conclusion, there is little doubt that confronting what happened at that time will help solve unanswered questions, make some characters doubt the way they are living their lives and, in some cases, make enormous changes. I really enjoyed this novel, even though it was not a traditional ‘whodunnit’ and it made me question why I have not read more of Ruth Rendell’s novels. Luckily, that is something I can, and do, intend to rectify. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

Childhood playmates reunite after 70 years to solve murder
By Kirsten
This is closer to a novel of manners than a murder mystery, as a group of childhood friends are reunited in their 70s when a box containing two skeleton hands is found in their old play area. An early scene in the book reminded me of The Famous Five, with the older people sitting around being interviewed by a policeman about what they had noticed while playing all those years ago.
While the reader already knows the identity of the victims and the murderer, the friends have no idea... they are each more preoccupied by the impact of their reunion. Alan Norris starts daydreaming about his first love, Daphne, who is dazzling and glamorous in contrast to his dull and predictable wife Rosemary; Michael is steeling himself to meet his 99-year old father, who abandoned him as a child. The other couples are facing the inevitable health decline of old age, but one of the beautiful aspects of this book is that all the characters are still learning and growing and participating actively in life. None of them are defined by their age, even though their adult children and grandchildren are quick to dismiss any unpredictable behaviour as "Alzheimers".
The strongest and most engaging thread in the story is the "love triangle" between Rosemary, Alan and Daphne. This story makes a few surprising twists and turns, ending with a satisfying and believable conclusion. While I always enjoy Rendell's books, The Girl Next Door has a fresh and original style, and the intriguing, deceptively simple plot is handled with skill.

This was released too soon (Update)

Prima's Pokemon Crystal strategy guide is very well written, and is beautifully designed. It has a great deal of information on items held, where they are found and their uses. It has a thorough section on the Pikachu 2 GS and held items from Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, as well as Red/Blue/Yellow and an extensive section on types, new babies and breeding. Most all of this can be found in Prima's Gold/Silver Complete Pokedex guide. This book does not have information on trainers' rosters in the game save for the Gym Leaders and the detailed section on the Elite Four, the Kanto Gym Leaders and the final trainer, Red. This isn't important to some consumers, but it is to me. The book also has little information on the new Battle Tower which is supposed to be near Olivine City, there is only one mention of it in the book and it is nowhere on the Johto map. It is extremely easy to overlook. I feel that this book may have been rushed, reminiscent of the "Gold/Silver" rush when Gold/Silver first came out. Prima should have included at least something pertaining to the Battle Tower. It is not fair for consumers to buy more than one strategy guide for one game. If I want to purchase additional guides it should be based on the content not the lack thereof. Hopefully Prima will publish one that includes more Battle Tower information, until then, I recommend you wait for Versus Books or buy Nintendo's book. Prima's guide is nicely done, though.

Attractive guide but with some errors and omissions
By Lee G. Gilman
Game guides for the Pokemon series like these are usually for casual players, or used by serious players mainly for the maps. There are a number of online, in-depth FAQ's on sites like gamefaqs.com which cover strategy that printed guides cannot. Prima's guide is certianly eye-candy when compared to the text file FAQ's found online. The maps are large and useful (by contrast, their Ruby/Sapphire guide has smaller maps which are harder to read for some locations.) However, there are shortcomings. It's ordered by area, so there are times when you must flip back through the book (after Team Rocket moves from Mahogany to Goldenrod, for example.) The Battle Tower is barely mentioned, the Pokedex only lists level-up moves for Pokemon (not TM or egg moves), and team rosters are only supplied for major opponents. It does have a very good breeding section and a listing of items. I recommend Prima's guide for the player who needs good maps, or who would like help getting through the game without spoilers for everything.

This book is filled with up-to-date information on pokemon crystal. Being a pokemon master, naturally this caught my interest. It is filled with maps, strategies and trainer pokemon information. Translation... everything you need to know (for ages 8+) to become a pokemon master. Of course you have to master the other pokemon games (red, blue, yellow, gold, silver and crystal) to claim yourself or your child a pokemon master. From the outstanding mind of Elizabeth.M.Hollinger came this 128pg creation, the ultimate pokemon crystal book.

How can we grow closer to God? Is there a secret to spriritual life? Do we need a second blessing? Is sanctification God's work or ours? Is it instantaneous or is it a process? The nature of Christian spirituality has been widely debated throughout the history of the church. The doctrine of sanctification was one of the main fissures separating Luther from the Catholic Church. Even today different groups of Protestants disagree on how we draw closer to God. What distinguishes the different poisitions and what exactly is at stake in these recurring debates? To answer these questions Donald L. Alexander, professor of biblical theology at Bethel College, has brought together five scholars that represent each of the main historical Protestant traditions:

  • Gerhard O. Forde on the Lutheran vew
  • Sinclair B. Ferguson on the Reformed view
  • Laurence W. Wood on the Wesleyan view
  • Russell P. Spittler on the Pentecostal view
  • E. Glenn Hinson on the Contemplative view
With an introduction by Alexander and responses to each of the main essays by the other contributors, this book provides a helpful and stimulating introduction to an important doctrine of the church.

Disappointing
By David C. Leaumont
I enjoy different viewpoint books because I can learn about what others believe and why. I think this helps me be a better rounded student of theology. I looked forward to this book with great anticipation, as I was looking for deeper study in this issue. Unfortunately, this book was one in which I was very disappointed.

The first 3 sections (Reformed, Lutheran and Wesleyan) begin with discussions from their "tradition" (a term most Evangelicals are averse to) first, and seem to treat Scripture as secondary. They discuss their central theologians first and in similar terms to that of Scripture (infallible). The Pentecostal view never once uses the term "Sanctification" in its writing, and instead uses this book as a platform for Pentecostal history and general systematic theology. This essay was the epitome of "off-topic" writing. While I have a Pentecostal background, I thought this was a lost opportunity to explain this issue in a different way from the other congregations did. The Contemplative view is shown despite this being called a "conservative evangelical" book. This view, while said to have a long lineage, is a new age mysticism that discusses Gnosticism in less than unfavorable terms. The mere inclusion of contemplative theology in this book seems strange since their tradition lends more to feeling/experience and less to study/knowledge.

Of those interested in this book, I would believe that most would be interested in their exegesis of Scripture. The Bible is full of passages on both Sanctification and Justification (a tightly bound theological concept.) Here is a stat sheet of sorts regarding Scriptural references and amount of pages.
Reformed: 11 references in 20 pages
Lutheran: 132 references in 28 pages
Wesleyan: 73 references in 22 pages
Pentecostal: 27 references in 21 pages
Contemplative: 17 references in 17 pages
Many of these references were lists of parallel passages. But, with the amount of Scripture available for discussion and reference on this topic, I found most of the writings sadly lacking in Scriptural reference. (3 of the writers really dropped the ball in regards to Scriptural discussion, which is the foundation of all of these beliefs, even the contemplatives.)

There are surely other books on Sanctification that can help (I am off to search for others now). This is not a book that is useful for any level of theologian, pastor or lay-person as it does not cover the topic suggested in full, but only gives good inputs by 3 similar beliefs and leaves out much of evangelical teaching on Sanctification.

Another issue is that 4 of the theologians (all but the Pentecostal, since the Pentecostal view was a basic discussion of systematic theology from a Pentecostal view) used liberal theologians and philosophers in their discussions. For a conservative evangelical book, this is strange. Kierkegaard, Bultmann and Bonhoeffer are three that somewhat strange to find in a self-described conservative Christian book.

---My review is NOT based out of disagreement with these beliefs, but because I think this book sorely missed the mark of the intended purpose.---

Priceless
By Rev. J. Mann
I'm a Reformed Presbyterian pastor. Sinclair Ferguson's chapter is priceless. It's far and away the fullest and clearest summary explanation of a Christ-centered view of sanctification I've ever encountered. His interaction with other positions is instructive. It also helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses of other views.

Very good treatment of views of sanctification
By Jason Kanz
A friend of mine, Eric Johnson, recommended the book Christian Spirituality: Five Views of Sanctification, which was edited by Donald Alexander (1988). Representatives from Lutheran (Gerhard Forde), Reformed (Sinclair Ferguson), Wesleyan (Laurence W Wood), Pentecostal (Russell P. Splitter), and Contemplative (E. Glenn Hinson) traditions were represented. Each author provided an explanation of how their tradition, from their viewpoint, understands the process of sanctification. Each of the other authors then offered a response to the primary essays.

Unsurprisingly, I found myself resonating with both the Lutheran and Reformed viewpoints. I had already heard excellent things about Forde's chapter on the Lutheran view of sanctification. As I anticipated, his was a grace saturated chapter. He views sanctification as an issue of getting used to our justification and so, in the words of Luther, "to progress is to begin again" or as Jerry Bridges might say, "we need to preach the gospel to ourselves every day. Ferguson was clearly grounded in the Calvinist, reformed tradition. Strong emphases were placed upon the sacraments, the Word, and union with Christ.

The Wesleyan and Pentecostal traditions made much less sense to me, at least in terms of how I understand scripture. Both talk about a strong move toward holiness, which is a good thing, but they seem to be very man centered in their understanding. Further, each speaks about the notion of second blessing or a second filling of the Spirit, for which I see no scriptural support. To me, these viewpoints leave people feeling hopeless.

I need to spend more time contemplating the contemplative tradition. One of the things I have appreciated about the contemplative tradition is that there is a focus on the affective or "carditive" aspects of faith rather than just the cognitive aspects. We could all grow by understanding the emotional side of the faith better.

On the whole, this is a good book to help people think through what does sanctification mean. Several of the essays are compelling and allow the reader to think about what does sanctification actually mean, hopefully to make a biblically informed decision.
