From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. Books in the new, inexpensive paperback Fairy Tale Classics series are extremely uneven, and it's no surprise that authors aren't identified. The texts are bland and generic; the art is greeting-card style with glamorized, idyllic African American characters who bat their eyelashes and smile and smile. Kids will like the brave boy who overcomes his foolishness in Jack and the Beanstalk, which blends several fairy tales together. But then there's a heavy message: "They shared their wealth with poorer people." Yes, African American kids want to find themselves and their families in traditional stories; it's certainly nice to see Jack in dreadlocks. But fairy tales are more than sweet messages and upbeat role models, and there are many excellent African American versions that offer fuller text and much better illustrations. Virginia Hamilton's The Girl Who Spun Gold (2000) is a fine West Indian version of "Rumpelstiltskin," with Leo and Diane Dillons' exquisite illustrations, bright with patterns from traditional African geometric cloths. Then there's Brian Pinkney's Thumbelina (2003), with its lovely, dark-skinned heroine; Joyce Carol Thomas' The Gospel Cinderella [BKL F 15 04]; and lots, lots more. Hazel Rochman

Love these hard to find African American tales
By divika
Great resell of classic characters with an Afro centric feel to them. Innocently and tastefully done, but so hard to find and expensive!!! Twice as much is why I paid for these African American fairy tales than the original classics, but worth every penny for young minds to dream and use the power of "what if" . Simple, well done revisions of classics.

The Bluegrass Conspiracy: An Inside Story of Power, Greed, Drugs, and Murder, by Sally Denton

When Kentucky Blueblood Drew Thornton parachuted to his death in September 1985 carrying thousands in cash and 150 pounds of cocaine, the gruesome end of his startling life blew open a scandal that reached to the most secret circles of the U.S. government. The story of Thornton and The Company he served, and the lone heroic fight of State Policeman Ralph Ross against an international web of corruption, is one of the most portentous tales of the 20th century.

From Library Journal
Denton, a former investigator for Jack Anderson, relates a sordid tale of corruption in Lexington, Kentucky. Among the major players were Governor John Y. Brown; his top political aides; former policeman and blueblood Andrew Thornton, the leader of an organization known as the "Company"; and other bluebloods, rich from money originally earned in horse-breeding and racing. Ralph Ross, a Kentucky state policeman who began a crusade to catch Thornton and his associates, was eventually forced out by being framed in an illegal wiretapping charge. Yet ultimately press coverage exposed the conspiracy. A labyrinthian tale, made complex by its mix of "good guys" and "bad guys," this will be of interest to libraries with large true crime sections. Recommended.

Review
"A larger than real-life thriller." -- The Wall Street Journal

About the Author
Sally Denton is an investigative reporter, author, and historian who writes about the subjects others ignore--from a drug conspiracy in Kentucky to organized crime in Las Vegas; from corruption within the Mormon Church to the hidden history of Manifest Destiny; from one of America's bitterest political campaigns to the powerful forces arrayed against Franklin D. Roosevelt. She has an extensive background in print and broadcast journalism, including newspapers, magazines, and television, and is the author of eight books of narrative history and investigative nonfiction. While the subjects of her books at first glance seem disparate, they are actually unified by a central theme of the exploration of subjects in American history--and especially in the American West--that have been neglected or marginalized. What she has done in her 30-year career is to explore the unmentioned truths about America--what the eminent scholar Daniel Boorstin called "Hidden History." She is a Guggenheim fellow, a Woodrow Wilson public scholar, a Hoover Institute Media Fellow, a Black Mountain/Kluge fellow, the recipient of two Western Heritage Awards, and has been inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. She is a fourth generation Nevadan, where she began her journalism career in 1976, and is a longtime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Intrigue and Deception
By Jeff Mosley
Sally Denton has written a book that this Kentuckian would have never thought possible! By examining what starts out as a simple rogue Lexington cop, she (through the work of a Kentucky State Trooper) follows a trail that leads to an exposure of absolute corruption. What one would think is a simple drug peddling ring turns out to have significant connections with South American governments, Quadaffi, major players in the Kentucky government, and a potential presidential candidate. This book in intriguing from the first sentence to the final page. I highly recommend it to anyone.

It is an interesting read on how things were here in Kentucky back in the day.
By sherwilson @ Simply Sherryl
I grew up in the local area during the time frame covered by this book. It is pretty spot on in history and political positions.

Although what actually happened to Drew is still in question to some, this book gives a good overview of the time frame and the people involved. Money, drugs and all the expected ill gains were a big part of Kentucky history.

I thought it was an interesting read especially since I know of and knew personally several of the people written about in the book.I think some of the details could and should have been elaborated on, but the author had her story to tell not mine.

It is an interesting read on how things were here in Kentucky back in the day.

Truth is more scary than fiction!!
By Ron H
This was to replace an old paperback version of the book, probably 1995 or thereabouts. Great story, and very well researched. However, it could have been better written. It is difficult to go from a live TV news reporter to actually putting the words on paper, and she had a bit of trouble. However, I would recommend it.

Cuban Counterpoint: Tobacco and Sugar, by Fernando Ortiz

First published in 1940 and long out of print, Fernando Ortiz’s classic work, Cuban Counterpoint is recognized as one of the most important books of Latin American and Caribbean intellectual history. Ortiz’s examination of the impact of sugar and tobacco on Cuban society is unquestionably the cornerstone of Cuban studies and a key source for work on Caribbean culture generally. Though written over fifty years ago, Ortiz’s study of the formation of a national culture in this region has significant implications for contemporary postcolonial studies.
Ortiz presents his understanding of Cuban history in two complementary sections written in contrasting styles: a playful allegorical tale narrated as a counterpoint between tobacco and sugar and a historical analysis of their development as the central agricultural products of the Cuban economy. Treating tobacco and sugar both as agricultural commodities and as social characters in a historical process, he examines changes in their roles as the result of transculturation. His work shows how transculturation, a critical category Ortiz developed to grasp the complex transformation of cultures brought together in the crucible of colonial and imperial histories, can be used to illuminate not only the history of Cuba, but, more generally, that of America as well.
This new edition includes an introductory essay by Fernando Coronil that provides a contrapuntal reading of the relationship between Ortiz’s book and its original introduction by the renowned anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. Arguing for a distinction between theory production and canon formation, Coronil demonstrates the value of Ortiz’s book for anthropology as well as Cuban, Caribbean, and Latin American studies, and shows Ortiz to be newly relevant to contemporary debates about modernity, postmodernism, and postcoloniality.

For those who want to pass beyond cliches and stereotypes
By Michael N. Landis
Ortiz is a wonderous writer. He compares and contrasts Cuba's two principal crops in wickedly funny prose (even in its English translation here). I first came across the original 1940 English hard-cover edition a lifetime ago. Over the years, I've tried to find another copy of that long out-of-print edition, but with no luck. Now it is once again available. Worth the price of admission if only you read the outrageous description of what product--sugared bon-bons, or a nice Habana tobaco--certain female fictional protagonists (e.g. Faust's Margurite) would choose. This book should be savored, like a fine Habana tobaco!

Effective
By Jacob Glicklich
Extended early twentieth century analysis of the titular themes, tracking the comparative impact of Tobacco and Sugar on Cuba. Starts with the premise of a very dry subject matter, but quickly makes it fascinating, rolling off fascinating insights, neat connections, stunning juxtapositions and effective systemic analysis. The look into the philosophy and aesthetic behind each plant is entertaining, the argument for how each substance is gendered intriguing, but it's in the overview of how the economics functioned that really make the book take of is the insight into economics. Ortiz argues persuasively that while it's the most pleasant crop, sugar has also directly accompanied a process of standardization, mass production, mechanization and foreign exploitation of Cuba that connects a very destructive long term legacy. In contrast, he explores venues by which Tobacco has had the potential for autonomy and overall financial advantage.

The first half is a surprisingly engaging and fast moving chain of analysis that offers much of worth in asssessing colonial and postcolonial conditions generally. After that, the second half is far less satisfying, as it goes into listing and specifics to substantiate the main thesis, slowing the main pace down to a crawl and rendering large setions frankly boring. Still, taken as a whole this is an exciting and virtal work.

The starting-point for Cuban studies
By Josue Torres
If you are thinking about studying Cuban history and society, or if you just want to extend your knowledge of it, this book is a must on either case. Cuban Counterpoint should be taken as the starting-point for Cuban history and society studies. Ortiz brilliantly reveals the importance that the island's two major economic products have played over the years and the contrast among them throughout society. It is very important for a first time reader to read each respective introduction in order to have better understanding of how this work came about, in which period of time it was completed and its significance to Cuban studies. The first part of the book is the central focus of Ortiz' work and even though the second part might feel a bit boring at times, it does contains some vital content. Again, overall the book is a must in order to fully understand Cuban history and society; enjoy reading it.

Most books that are written by scientists for the general public present what scientists know. By contrast, this book by this scientist is concerned with what most scientists know little about and ignore - topics considered theoretically impossible and/or devoid of credible evidence. There are fourteen examples. Some are familiar challenges, such as purportedly psychic phenomena and the enigmatic UFO reports. Some are less familiar, such as cold fusion and evidence that radioactive decay rates – usually considered to be constant for any element – may not be constant after all. But the topics are not restricted to conventional or even unconventional science - scientific thinking may sometimes be applied to non-scientific questions. The book ends with an example – Who wrote the plays and poems conventionally attributed to “Shakespeare”?

Review
"This collection of Peter Sturrock's wide-ranging ideas offers an intellectual joyride second to none. I especially liked his treatment of coded messages in Shakespeare's Folio. Similar eyebrow-raising insights abound!" - Gregory Benford, author of Timescape

"This is a valuable book that illuminates a number of topics that are rarely addressed by the scientific community - but should be. Each topic is puzzling and controversial, partly because the observational evidence itself is puzzling, but partly because the scientific community is - in general - unwilling to discuss it. I am impressed by the neutral tone of the discussion in the book: each phenomenon and the evidence for it are presented dispassionately, so readers can arrive at their own judgment. For each topic, the author gives a list of articles and books for further reading. I recommend this book to persons interested in the facts and science behind these puzzling phenomena."- J.R. (Randy) Jokipii, Regents' Professor of Planetary Sciences and Astronomy, University of Arizona

"This book is written by a renowned scientist for everyone who dismisses extra-ordinary phenomena out of hand, without knowledge of the facts. It is an eye opener and a mind opener! It reveals avaster world, beyond the reach of our current scientific paradigm." - Federico Faggin, coinventor of the microprocessor

"To the general public -- and to most scientists -- science may be seen as a beautiful well-ordered garden. However, there are some scientists who are curious to know what lies beyond the garden walls. In Late Night Thoughts About Science, renowned physicist Peter Sturrock offers us a glimpse of what lies outside the familiar garden. In fifteen short essays, he introduces us to phenomena that seem to be incompatible with the current scientific paradigm. Many mainstream scientists will be scandalized by this book. So be it." - Daniel P. Sheehan Professor of Physics, University of San Diego, San Diego, California

"Peter Sturrock is a scientist's scientist. Here is a book that pursues areas of public interest with the courage to find the truth. You have heard of patient-centered care. Here is public-centered science. Read it not to find the truth, but find out how to find it. Bravo!" - Wayne B. Jonas, M.D., President and CEO, Samueli Institute

"In the erudite and congenial style that befits a Stanford professor, Peter Sturrock dares to pose a series of stimulating questions that few of his colleagues have ventured to research or even acknowledge. We are fortunate that a senior researcher such as Sturrock, while recognizing the need for scientists to remain rational and appropriately skeptical, has summed up his vast scholarship in this entertaining volume, reminding us of the challenges that lie ahead and of the wonderful mysteries yet to be explored." - Jacques Vallee, Author, Scientist and Venture Capitalist

"As the island of scientific knowledge grows, so does its extended shoreline of unexplained observations. Professor Sturrock, a highly respected astrophysicist by day, shares his nighttime thoughts to illuminate that shoreline of enigmas ranging from ball lightning and low-energy nuclear reactions to UFOs, precognition, and the Shakespeare Authorship Question. An absolutely captivating tour!" - Harold E. Puthoff, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin

"After a long career in physics and astrophysics as a professor at Stanford University, Peter Sturrock is still curious about nature's mysteries and, in Late Night Thoughts about Science, he looks with a sense of wonder at true mysteries in science. The purpose of this book is not that of explaining science to the general public - scientists will enjoy it along with non-scientists. This book is unique and deserves to find a large audience. It could open some minds." - Garret Moddel, Professor, Electrical, Computer & Energy Engineering, University of Colorado

"Isaac Asimov once remarked, "The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' (I found it!) but 'That's funny'...." -- meaning something that evokes wonder- something that is not in accord with conventional wisdom and challenges us to learn something new. Peter Sturrock's Late Night Thoughts About Science is an entertaining but challenging parade of such topics. For anyonewith an open mind, this book will be enormously stimulating. I love this book! " - Larry Dossey, MD, Author: One Mind;Executive Editor:Explore

"Peter Sturrock, a noted physicist and astrophysicist, has spent some of his evening hours thinking about a few of the puzzles on the edges of science and provides concise, clear introductions to a number of them. While he does not resolve any of these anomalies, he gives enough detail to tantalize even a skeptic. It is a short, easy read, and may leave your mind somewhat more open than when you began." - Charlie Tolbert, Professor of Astronomy, University of Virginia

Bread Crumbs to Follow Through the Darkening Woods
By Richard Thieme
“Late Night Thoughts About Science” by Peter A. Sturrock is a teaser as well as a repast. It's a repast because the short examples of a variety of scientific anomalies, as orthodoxy styles them, is in itself rich and rewarding. Examples of, for instance, remote viewing or clairvoyance or well-documented UFO phenomena are carefully chosen and challenge readers who bring arch-skeptical attitudes toward such things. Either his examples are invented or mistaken or even fraudulent, the reader might think ... OR, the book clearly suggests, it is facts themselves that are are damned, as Charles Fort said, by an orthodoxy which will not or cannot entertain them as incontrovertible facts. The reader who is willing to choose the latter option is at the beginning, not the end, of an intellectual adventure.

Chapter after chapter, the facts are presented carefully, quietly, matter-of-factually, until the burden is on the reader to refute them or - one intention of this short collection, I believe - use the well-chosen suggestions for further reading to explore each subject in depth and detail on his or her own.

The seventeen chapters open with four instances of unresolved issues that would be well known to scientifically trained persons - ball lightning, the Allais effect, low energy nuclear reactions, and properties of beta decay. This frames the inquiry in a way that is well within orthodox science, since these puzzles are part of the lore of orthodoxy itself and ought to be somewhat familiar. They are bread crumbs that one follows with easy acquiescence into the darkening forest of edgier facts where night is falling.

With the chapter on precognition, the text moves into what some call “paranormal” (in order to make clear they know what is normal and what is not), and that's when the reader either tosses the book away with a snort or says, hmmm, if this single account is true, what else might be true about this mysterious universe, final knowledge of which I certainly do not have, and how can I learn more? The “further reading” suggestions point the way. The segue from daylight science to nighttime reflections is seamless but as one reads about psychokinesis or crop circles, the night-time thoughts persist until the dawn and then they remain in the daylight.

Richard Feynman observed that a fact that is both a fact and anomalous is the most interesting fact because it suggests at the least that something has been overlooked or smoothed out on behalf of a coherent but false hypothesis. At the most, however, the anomalous fact might become the cornerstone of an entirely new way of framing what we know. Sturrock's lifetime of work is a testimony to that open-minded approach and where it might lead. My review on Amazon of his book “A Tale of Two Sciences” goes into much more detail about Sturrock's courage and career and the toll it takes to ask questions that respectable circle-the-wagons science prefers not to hear. He is an esteemed physicist who made major contributions to plasma physics and a thinker who has studied and asked hard serious questions of well-documented UFO phenomena, preferring to let the evidence suggest answers rather than making his prior answers distort or dismiss the evidence. If the reader's curiosity is stimulated by this collection, there is a lot more Sturrock-work to explore.

“Late Night Thoughts” is wise, thoughtful, careful, mature reflection, a good complement to his other books and evidence that at 92, Sturrock continues to find both fascination and fertile grounds for exploration in domains that others are too timid to touch.

Challenging thoughts about science
By Jeffrey D. Scargle
Every scientist should be exposed to the ideas put forth in this book -- which exposes some of the prejudices and assumptions lurking in modern science. The effectiveness of the scientific method is based in large part on its procedures for eliminating errors and avoiding models that do not agree with observations. The author in essence challenges scientists to objectively apply these methods to ideas that may seem contrary to accepted ideas. I believe most scientists will find, in the chapters of this book, claims they believe to be bogus -- possibly without having personally studied the purported phenomena. What then would they give as the reason for such a conclusion?

Opening the Mind
By Amazon Customer
Continuing a successful sixty-year career, Peter Sturrock takes the reader on a journey that explores phenomena that may be inconsistent with current science. This remarkable book follows his previous books (A Tale of Two Sciences: Memoirs of a Dissident Scientist) and others that awaken the reader to other ways of scientific inquiry. Dr. Sturrock states that he would like the answers to to questions that have not been answered. This book opens the reader's mind and generates new ways of viewing the world.

First hand accounts of a problem that is ongoing and universal - children refugees
By Hugh May
This book is excerpted by Diane Samuels in her written introduction to the play "Kindertransport", 1993/1995/2008.
This 1966 book was published near the time of the 25 th anniversary (1938-1939) of the first children's transports from Nazi Germany by one of those children, and is a collections of reminiscences. Thus it provides a first hand account of the times.
Other topical books include "Into the Arms of Strangers" (book and DVD); "If it is Not Impossible, the Life of Sir Nicholas Winton", by Barbara Winton, 2014. Winton died 7.1.2015.; "Nicholas Winton and the Rescued Generation" by Muriel Emmanuel and Vera Gissing, (2014 ed.). There are many other books and films on this subject.
"Lest we forget" applies to those times and to today's world of refugees and this book will help guide careful reflection, and perhaps action to this ongoing devastating and increasingly universal problem.

A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the soaring West Seattle Bridge, causing millions in damages; and following his inexplicable disappearance at age 80. Was he a suicide, a man broken by one costly misstep? Had he run off with a lifelong love? Or did a trail of gruesome evidence lead to the home Rolf shared with his wife, Ruth? On an island where everyone thought they knew their neighbors, the veneer of the Neslunds' marriage masked a convoluted case that took many years to solve. And, indeed, some still believe that the old sea captain will come home one day.

"The Sea Captain" is a classic tale as blood chilling as murder itself. Along with three other equally riveting, detailed accounts of destruction and murder committed without conscience or regret, Ann Rule takes listeners into frightening places they never could have imagined in No Regrets.

Great book, according to my wife
By Lord Dreamweaver
My wife is one of the biggest Ann Rule fans, and always dives into the books I get her (I am very fortunate that Ann publishes these anthologies just around Christmas. An easy gift for my wife!)

Each of the cases that Ann writes about has all of the earmarks of investigation used on the single topic books that she has written. I think that she collects all sorts of case information, and if it does not work itself into a stand alone case, she saves it for a collection like this.

This, and all of the other collected case file books are books that my wife will not put down until she is finished.
